This couldn’t be anywhere further from the truth. As you can probably imagine, I’m quite invested and passionate when it comes to e-sports and gaming overall. In the past, I’ve lead an extremely athletic life, participating and competing in sports that range form tennis to lacrosse, soccer, swimming and so on. Unfortunately though, I, for a lack of a better phrase, let myself go and couldn’t possibly pick up a sport and plan on playing on a competitive level without making massive lifestyle changes and whole heartedly dedicating myself to that activity, which simply wouldn’t benefit me at this crucial time in my academic life. One thing that I can say that I really do miss from competing in those sports is how my heart raced as I struggled to overcome obstacles day after day in the pursuit of perfecting myself as an athlete and striving toward achieving victory. E-sports have given me that exact same sensation. As of right now, I currently play in what is known as the High School Star League, an organization whose mission is, as their website claims: “providing high schoolers with a fun, competitive, and rewarding e-sports experience, similar to traditional high school sports” (HSL). E-sport teams across the world regardless of the game their playing have and continue to fully make use of support staff. You wouldn’t leave a team of hotheaded kids in a house until their next game left to their own devices for the same reason a university wouldn’t let a student on scholarship do as they please until they’re called upon. They need direction and discipline, and that comes in the form of support staff like coaches. The most glaring difference that people claim to see in e-sports is that there is no physical element to it all, so what do they do for practice, or how does what they’re doing constitute for physical activity at all since they’re just tapping away at a keyboard? Well, that’s just it; that “tapping” is what we in the e-sports community would associate with mechanical skill. Mechanical skills can be seen as largely physical and can more often then not be basic skills that you as a player are required to do daily. A fairly simple example of this is snapping on to a target as quickly as possible when it comes into sight in the likes
