E. Lockhart's We Were Liars

Improved Essays
E. Lockhart’s We Were Liars is a distorted story about a summer on a private island called Beechwood. Lockhart incorporates themes and morals throughout the book, but it's hidden in fairy tales and thoughts of the main character, Cadence. She writes about the significance of family, the consequences of power and greed, and what love can do to someone. There's an epic plot twist at the end, which will provoke the reader days after.

The book starts out with Cadence’s monologue, talking about who she is, but leaving out major details for the reader to find out later on. We later find out about the past summers on the island (how her dad left her mom and her, an accident, a relationship, and more). In Summer Sixteen, she travels to Europe

“We Are Not the World”, written by Greg Ip, is an article that explains that the current issues of the world, instead of being based on the struggles between the ‘left’ and the ‘right’, it is actually based on the struggles between globalists and nationalists. Ip speaks about how nationalists believe that globalism is indeed an ideology and should be treated as such despite others feeling that it is not. Throughout the article, Greg reiterates when globalism prevailed and when it fell, and gives reasons and several key points for why it rose and fell. A major key point of the article is that the “new nationalist surge” (Ip, 2017) is heavily against globalization as well as globalism.…

In the essay "The Insufficiencey of Honesty," the Stephen L. Carter divides his essay into three major categories. One category mentioned in his essay was titled Telling Everything You Know. In this category, he discussed how being completely honest can be negitave because it can cause harm and place burdens on others. I completley agree with this statement because there are some things that should not be mentioned in respect of other people's emotions. In Upon the Burning of Our House, by Anne Bradstreet, readers are being told about a person who goes to bed and wakes up to find their house being burned to the ground with all of her possessions in it. The main point of the poem is that your earthly possessions don’t really matter in the long run because it is only temporary; People are ultimately going to heaven and the “mighty architect” (Bradstreet Line 44), is going to provide for them. It seems that in the poem, the speaker is trying to remind herself of this when she says “Then straight I’gin my heart to chide, and did thy wealth on earth abide? Didst fix thy hope on mould’ring dust,” (Bradstreet Line 37-39). This all ties together with the Puritan belief that spiritual wealth is more…
