Three Controversial Messages
Messages Through the Poems of Auden and Cummings

There are three messages in the poems, The Unknown Citizen, Old Age Sticks, and Anyone lived in a pretty how town. All of the messages have to do with the way we live our lives and our outlooks on life. All of these poems have controversial themes and can be hard to understand. They show the looks on life and these three messages through different characters. These characters consist of an old person, an ex-patriot, and two lovers. Three messages that anyone could learn from is stepping outside the box, learning to listen others, and living life to the fullest.

In the poem, “Citizen”, the ex-patriot believes everyone is treated as a number rather than an actual human being. The message of this poem is that we should do things out of the normal for society. The person in the poem was considered to be very “normal”. He was an American man who had a family of five children, money, and an education. He feels like none of the stuff he does matter because in the end he will die and he is just a number. The society assumes this man is happy because he has money and because he is free. The poem says, “Was he free? Was he

Cummings uses a very controversial topic that may be hard to understand that has to do with the way we view the elderly and their opinion. We tend to not listen to our elders that give us advice. As a younger generation, we always believe we are correct and that older people are wrong. However, most of the time they are right because they have been in that same situation. We should learn to take more advice from the elderly and listen to what they have to say because chances are they’re right. In the poem it says, “The youth laughs”, implying that the youth doesn’t care about those opinions or think they are absurd. We should take the advice of the elderly because we never know what they will have to say and it could have a great impact on

Could you imagine dirt actually being clean or a globe in the shape of a square? Dirt wouldn’t really be dirt then, nor a globe really a globe. If you have read the poem “If” by E. E. Cummings, then you may remember theses crazy allusions. Cummings is not trying to confuse your brain, however, he is simply making an observation on possibilities of the future or the notion of there is no perfect world. My perspective of the poem is that if things were different, then we wouldn’t be who we are and in a perfect world, humans will just find wrong in it anyway.…

When the poet Frances Scott Key saw the American flag gusting in the wind atop Fort McHenry in 1814, he was so in awe of what it represented that he crafted what would eventually become America’s national anthem, The Start Spangled Banner (Smithsonian). His lyrics eloquently illustrated the pride of an evolving nation and the resilience of the American flag, which served as the most exalted symbol of nationalism and civic pride. Two hundred years later, his brief moment of inspiration still provides Americans and potential immigrants in search of the American dream, hope and belief, that the United States is a land where dreams are fulfilled and freedom is everlasting. However, close examination of Key’s lyrics reveals an ironic paradigm shift…

I have been writing some assignments in which I had to include poetry, logos, pathos, ethos and many more during this school year. It has taught me how to use each one of them in different ways. During this school year I read a poem which is written by Emily Dickinson and it taught me how poetry is written and it also carries a meaning or an hidden message, also an expression or thought that the person feels. For example, in one of her poems “hope” she uses an example of a bird or a angel to express her thought or feelings and how it can destroy you in a quick instant, but it can also help without expecting anything from you.…

I chose to do [l(a] by E.E Cummings, the form of the pome is trying to demonstrate what the poet is trying to get the reader to visualize. For myself it was helpful when the poet used the parenthesis to tell that a single leaf fell. Reading this poem was extremely hard to understand the first time, after the second and third time I started to understand all the words and why it was going straight done with only two to three letters on each line. By just writing the few characters in each line not only told the story of the leaf falling but also demonstrated what it may have looked like. In 10th grade I wrote a form poem the shape of a car, it was pretty difficult to do so especially since you have to figure out the word count for each line…

Otherness in today’s society is more apparent today than ever. Otherness is, according to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, “the quality or state of being other or different” (Merriam-Webster, 2011). In reviewing the poem, “White House,” by Claude McKay, otherness is represented by his personal view of otherness and his struggle with being a small part of a large institution. In the following analysis you will see many representations of McKay’s belief in otherness. He believed that the working class was oppressed and otherness was unjustly forced upon them.…

This poem called “Your Name is X” by Juan Felipe is not an easy poem to understand all together but sentence by sentence I have some clue what he is trying to say. The first sentence would have many meanings such as the hands are trembling because his hands are so tired of physical labor he can 't control the trembling, or maybe it 's because of old age were his hands tremble just because of the age that he has. Reading the other sentences his hands might be trembling due to the fact that he is scared and just simply trembling uncontrollably from being scared of the unknown lurking in the darkness. The following sentence gives me the interpretation that the man is scared because you hear unknown echoes from the shadows and the shadow means darkness, evil, and people who mean harm.…
