E-Collaboration
Organizations need effective communication and collaboration tools in order to operate properly and successfully. With organizations growing globally face to face communication is harder to do and is costly. Different forms of communication have been developed for better and faster communication saving travel time and money for businesses. The internet has been a major part of global communication and businesses are taking advantage of this form of communication. It is an easier and faster way to communicate and collaborate globally through the internet. Internet access can give organizations the ability to "[introduce] more products at faster rates, with shorter life cycles (Hollenbeck, Zinkhan, French, & Ji Hee, 2009). It makes vendor-client communication a lot easier, saves time and money and helps businesses stay competitive. Another difference from face to face communication is that it is easier to communicate with others. Businesses are now able to communicate and collaborate through the internet regardless location. There are two tools for communicating and collaborating through the internet: synchronous and asynchronous. The synchronous form of communication and collaboration is when groups are working together at the same time. An asynchronous form of communication and collaboration is when groups work together but at different times, leaving messages to be read (King, Lee, Liang, Turban, 2012). Groupware is software’s for groups working common task that involves collaborating. They are inexpensive and mostly web-based. These software products can be used collaborating in the same room or worldwide. There are software’s for general, synchronous and asynchronous type of meetings. Some of the general software’s include built-in e-mail, messaging system, instant messaging, browser interface, joint web page creation, file sharing, shared screens, electronic decision rooms, and peer-to-peer networks. A synchronous system includes webinar, webcast, video conferencing, audio conferencing, shared white board, smartboard, instant messaging, and live chat.
