Discovered in a human colon in 1855 by German bacteriologist Theodor Escherich, E. coli is “the most prevalent infecting organism in the family of gram-negative bacteria known as enterobacteriaceae”, according to about-ecoli.com. Scientifically, it was previously known as Bacterium coli, it was later changed to Escherichia coli in honour of its discoverer [1]. E.
