Dystopian Society In The Giver By Lois Lowry

The science fiction novel by Lois Lowry The Giver, is a book about a dystopian society that is constructed. In the novel, a boy named Jonas is selected as the new Receiver of Memory, after his successor, who is referred to as The Giver. The Giver and, after his training, Jonas, are supposed to hold all of the memories for the community they live in. During his training, The Giver gives Jonas memories and he begins experiencing and questioning many things. Through the help of The Giver, Jonas is able to realize the flaws of his society. One memory that Jonas receives is the impression of violence. For example, Jonas sees the memory of poaching elephants where he hears whispering and observers more colors, like different kinds of skin tones and red blood. In addition, Jonas experiences guns and real pain, instead of just a scrape on the knee that citizens get in his community. Not only that, but, Jonas sees the memory of war and he encounters with people who get shot and die. He also sees soldiers and the impact of hunger, that The Giver needed to recall recently. For instance, Jonas gets a memory about birthdays and sees a child being singled out to be celebrated. He sees a birthday cake and gifts given to the child. Moreover, The Giver gives the memory of Christmas and Jonas is overcome by the emotions he has never experienced in the past, a real family, warmth of togetherness, and true happiness. He sees the grandparents, parents, and children give presents to one another, and how giving can form love. When Jonas approaches his parents and asks them if they love him, his parents say the word love is meaningless, therefore, making Jonas upset and confused. Jonas realizes that through these memories and his parents response, there are no real families in the society, and the people themselves have no feelings because of the stirring
