Throughout history, man has shown a great tendency to gravitate towards decisions that end in destruction, especially if the destruction will not directly affect himself. Occurences such as war declarations do not necessarily have to be decided on by the masses, but only a single man’s will. By that man’s will, millions of innocent lives can be lost, his own usually not included. Kurt Vonnegut is a fantastic author that uses satire in order to draw attention and ridicule the flaws of mankind, most of which end in destruction and chaos of some sort. In two of his novels, Cat’s Cradle and Slaughterhouse-Five, damage and destruction of millions is determined by what can potentially be a single man’s decision.…

However, their situations rarely get any better. This is because of the duplicity of countries with fast-growing economies. While the poor people reside in slum huts that are covered with rats, mosquitoes and garbage, the rich people reside in luxurious hotels and condominiums. Moreover, while children like Sunil are stunted due to malnutrition, leftover food is dumped everyday at the hotels. Therefore, the main message of this book is that instead of blaming one another for all the suffering that they are going through, they cooperate to come up with a solution to the horrendous reality of the gap between the rich and the poor.…
“We should seek not a world where the black race and the white race live in harmony, but a world in which the terms black and white have no real political meaning” (Coates Post-Racial 1). Ta-Nehisi Coates is an American writer, journalist, and educator best known for his novel Between The World And Me. Coates was inspired to write his novel after an eventful meeting with President Barack Obama in 2013. Katherine Boo not only describes unhappiness and poverty in Annawadi but also shows how structural poverty and inequality produced by globalization regulate the life in “Behind the beautiful forevers”. Global market capitalism strikes the root of the poor people’s anxious lives who suffer from worldwide economic slump, non-regular workforce, and the rat race. Annawadi is a slum of Mumbai in India and is surrounded by the airport and five splendid hotels. It is hard for Annawadians to get jobs in the big city so they dig up waste and sell recyclable trash for living. Abdul’s younger brother, Mirchi, put it “Everything around us is roses and we’re the shit in between (Prologue, p.xii).”…

The power of story truth and happening truth in the life of Tim O’Brien The author Tim O’Brien finds the way to tell his Vietnam War experience in his book by giving the story-truth and not happening-truth. The story-truth that never happened to him shows how he felt inside during the fighting for his life. The happening-truth seems to him not as interesting as the fiction that he tells in the story “The Things They Carried.” The story-truth is the better way to share human experience, and it is demonstrated the work by Tim O'Brien.…

“Beggars do not envy millionaires. Though, of course, they will envy other beggars who are more successful.” This quote by Bertrand Russell pulls on the strings of themes such as personal relation to others, economic and social class, and contempt for others as an abstract concept. These same strings are weaved through the novel And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini, in obscure way through character relationships and behavior, diction, and other literary elements. In a novel that’s predominantly about cultural interaction, Hosseini still touches on how economic superiority affects the way cultures and individuals interact with each other.…
The word “truth” can be defined as factual data, individual perspectives, shared experiences, universal dictums, beliefs, etc. The definition of truth is complex which makes defining truths of war problematic. Three works used to define the many truths of war were, Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, and Francis Ford Coppola’s movie Apocalypse Now. Out of the numerous truths of war that were identified in all three of these works, two truths were chosen to be presented. Those two truths that are seen frequently throughout the novel are war is chaotic and it changes people.…
