In the novel, the controller himself tells John that they have sacrificed the high art such as Shakespeare and the Bible because they cause people to reflect. It is simply illegal to possess any form of high art within that dystopian society because individuals are not allowed to posses a consciousness of their own. Members within the futuristic society of “Brave New World” have no problem with its laws and regulations because they do not understand anything besides the sleep-teachings that are taught to them. Furthermore, the more one abides by the laws of society, the more they prosper and obtain their happiness. This is further shown with the character Lenina. She is an ordinary member of society who follows the laws such as “everyone belongs to everyone else” (pg. 37). She does this by having multiple sex partners and does not participate in any form of monogamy because that too is outlawed. In “Brave New World”, society is split into five castes such as Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons. Due to the technology used by the World State’s leaders, caste is pre-determined and humans are grown in a manner appropriate to fit their status. For instance, the lower castes are created to be unpleasant and unintelligent. Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons are simply faceless clones creates to serve the more intelligent Alphas and Betas. Because the lower castes are only provided with little skills, they feel as if they have fulfilled their purpose and so they are content. This further helps to feel a sense of belonging within their society because they use the skills they possess to acquire a job that helps the society function as a whole. This was shown in the novel when the Epsilon-Minus had assisted the higher castes by fulfilling the position of a liftman. His job was to transport the member of the higher castes to certain floors of the building. In addition, he would gain satisfaction when the elevator reached the roof. Simple things like this gave the lower castes satisfaction for their purpose and further feel as if they belonged in their society.
