Dystopian Future Female Protagonists Overcome Gender Stereotypes
I. Introduction
A. Dystopian future novels are recently popular and strong female protagonists are representing the heroes in modern-day fiction.
B. Katniss and Tris of the trilogy books, the Hunger Games and Divergent respectively, both represent non-traditional female roles in storytelling.
C. The bestselling dystopian future novels, the Hunger Games and Divergent, use strong female protagonists that show immense strength and courage despite still having human flaws. These three-dimensional characters challenge gender stereotypes in young adult literature.
II. The strong female protagonists in these trilogies face different circumstances, but they share similarities. They care deeply for their friends and families, and are willing to risk their lives to

She accepts that because she is different from the others, she must sacrifice herself for the good of the factions.
III. The weaknesses in the protagonists form very human characters.
A. Katniss is quite stubborn and withdrawn. She doesn’t seek help from other characters and ends up acting in revenge when she decides to revolt against the Capitol and assassinate President Snow.
1. Katniss doesn’t open up to other characters, and remains quite reclusive.
2. Katniss becomes blinded by anger and revenge near the end of the trilogy. The Games have psychologically scarred her, and by the end of the trilogy she still suffers from nightmares.
B. Tris has conflicting emotions that help mold her into a more human character that readers can identify with. She analyzes her own emotions, and tends to change them drastically.
1. Tris has difficulty dealing with her emotions throughout the trilogy. She changes emotions quickly, and she is often wrong with her opinions.
2. Tris is self-sacrificing, which results in her leaping into suicide missions over and over.
IV. The characters aren’t stereotypical, which makes them break the mold from female gender
