Therefore, I was really on board with someone who wanted to talk about how he had pushed through a dyslexia diagnosis and zero college degrees to great intellectual success. Unfortunately, by the second page of his essay, he’d lost me. According to Horner, people who have dyslexia, “…think outside the box precisely because [they] have never been in one.…

I was not able to read until the second grade and I did not discover I was dyslexic until the ninth grade. Although I was not a quick learner, my fourth grade English teacher, Mrs. Lawson, showed me unconditional patience and love, she is the reason I am so passionate about English today. Sadly, Mrs. Lawson along with her family of five died in 2009, during only her second year of being a teacher. Through only a year and a half of teaching, Mrs. Lawson was able to leave a legacy of students to have a desire to pass on the love of English.…

A program that I wish to participate in. I read that you grew up in poverty, that you worked hard to get the education you hungered for, and that you understand how diversity can be influenced by education. I also read that your method of teaching has been used to teach farm workers how to read and write.…

I never desired to be anything more than a high school graduate that floats from job to job, I never desired having a stable career.…

“Parents believe the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education should provide training for educators so teachers understand what dyslexia is” (Leicht). Children with dyslexia may experience difficulties at school because they feel like they do not fit in with the other children in their class. Teachers can break tasks down into small easily remembered pieces of information. “Parents of children with dyslexia often have to struggle to get their children the education they need to succeed” (Leicht). “Encouraging a daily routine to help develop the child's own self-reliance and responsibilities could help in the classroom environment” (Leicht).…

In the 5th grade I had little knowledge what was it meant to be Dyslexic. After I was diagnosed with Dyslexia, I had to come up with a conclusion of what it meant to be Dyslexic by taking in other comments and comparing it with my limited knowledge. From my observations I created the notion that having a learning difference also meant I had limitations in my ability to be successful. If I had Dyslexia, then how could I be a successful student, or have my desired career if I had a “disability”?…

Elliot et al. argue against the concept of dyslexia altogether - or, more specifically, about the application of being diagnosed with dyslexia (Elliott and Gibbs, 2008). These researchers argued that being labelled as a dyslexic person will facilitate stigma, disenfranchisement, and inequitable use of resources; most importantly, in his view, it will deprive the poor readers who were not diagnosed as dyslexic from the same resources that will be provided for dyslexic students. He argues that the term dyslexia will allow people who were diagnosed with it to receive various kinds of treatment that the poor readers will be deprived of, and he sees the whole dichotomy between the dyslexic and poor readers as false. His argument emphasizes the importance of ensuring that all children receive equal educational opportunities as he sees the concept of dyslexia to be unbounded and unverifiable.…
