This poem emphasizes the importance of instilling values through example. It also helps understand that our actions as parents can have a negative effect on a child long-term. Parenting does not come with a manual so these words remind us to provide our children with the best possible examples and let them be themselves.
Two individuals that contributed to the healthy development of my self-concept were my father and maternal grandmother. Both individuals were proud of their culture and believed in the concept of family first. Each with their own tumultuous family history, it was their strength and courage that gave them the will to rise above it all.
