There are several aspects of followership that one should implement. First, do not blame the boss, he/she has a lot of things on their plate. When things go wrong just acknowledge the situation, find solutions and move on. Blaming people does nothing but bring negativity into the work place. If the work place becomes a negative space the morale will go down as well as job performance. It is a slippery slope. Next do not fight your boss, while you may disagree with some of their decisions, you are the subordinate in the situation and should follow orders up to a certain extent (unless the boss’s instructions are a threat to life and limb then please speak up, etc.). Third, use initiative, if something needs to be done, do it. Once you have finished all your tasks, find out if there is anything else that you can get started on, do not just sit around and waste time. Your boss will see you as a productive member of the team and will hopefully appreciate your effort. Fourth, tell the truth and do not quibble. Have integrity, do not lie and try to cover things up because eventually all lies are found out and trust will be broken. Breaking trust within a boss/subordinate relationship will be a deal breaker. If your boss does not trust you how can you function as a team? Fifth, do your homework, if you do not fully understand the task you are given, take some time and research the topic. Once you have made the decision of bringing forth a disagreement, you must first and foremost always be in control of your emotions. If the disagreement has angered you, it is not wise to say things in the heat of the moment. Being as objective as possible about the dissent and that will hopefully keep the focus of the dissent on the issue and not on the emotions behind it. Ask yourself do you really disagree on the issues or are you more fueled by your emotions? This will help you from making yourself look

Sometimes firing an employee comes as a surprise to them, but most of the time they can see it coming if the manager has be giving them warnings. One must be sure to not make a scene while calling the employee into his/her office, humiliating someone in front of their peers will make the employee being terminated to become angrier and will increase the chances of a lawsuit. Joe Kennedy suggests in his book, that when one terminates the employee it is important to have another witness around who can testify that the manager has met all the legal requirements and that the employee understands why he/she is being laid-off.
