John Updike’s brief story “A&P” focuses on the choices made by a 19-year-old grocery clerk who is only identified by his first name, Sammy. The story is told in first person point-of-view so that the reader can see everything from Sammy’s viewpoint. There are two other characters in the story who are named Queenie and Lengel, this is how Sammy is brought to display. In Sammy’s perspective, we focus on his emotions, thoughts, and actions. What we are focusing on is whether Sammy is a static character or a dynamic character. I believe that Sammy is a dynamic character in this short story. When he is telling the part of how he quit he says, “Now here comes the sad part of the story, at least my family says it’s sad, but I don’t think it’s so sad myself.” In this situation, we are looking at Sammy still as that nineteen year old who has a whole life ahead of himself. Now Sammy is upset and mad of what he did. Sammy, the most dynamic person in the story, is sorted out in a couple of various ways. His name, itself, hints at his personality. The name, “Sammy”, shows that he is a younger boy; in addition to that, if Sammy were older they would have called him a name as Samuel. We are looking at Sammy’s feelings and attitude now and we see how Sammy is a dynamic character. Sammy’s point of view changes a lot from the beginning of the short story, to the end. Sammy who was a young adult was practically scared to speak his mind and to stand up for himself. Sammy now changes his mindset towards everything making him a dynamic character; it shows how his feelings were changing throughout the story and how Sammy ended up standing up for the girls that came into A&P. At the end of the short story, when Sammy quits his job, he dramatically takes off his apron, "shrugging it off" his

John Updike’s “A&P” presented a story of a young boy, Sammy, who worked at a grocery store called A&P as a cashier from his father’s suggestion, five miles away from a nearest beach. Throughout the story, Sammy faced the first challenge, which was how to get over his pre-occupation, and which was the appearance of the three girls walking into the store just in bathing suits. And that’s where Sammy’s last day of work started. In one second, the girls’ appearance caught Sammy’s eye, which he described as “a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it” (131). Of what Sammy thought, his description did caught it right in his eye that interrupted his job.…

Sammy’s attitudes throughout are conflicting and he does have an epiphany, but it seems to be for the wrong reason. Sammy’s personal ambitions cause him to act irrational and do many things out of spite. First, the setting of “A&P” plays a major role in the plot of the story but also an important factor in the thematic value of the story. “The cool of the A&P, under the fluorescent lights, against all those stacked packages, with her feet paddling along naked over our checkerboard green-and-cream rubber-tile floor” (Updike 373).…

In A&P, written by John Updike, the main character Sammy works at an A&P grocery store in a small town. Based upon his outlook, Sammy is presented in the story as a person uninterested in his life and seeking a change. After three girls are belittled for wearing bathing suits in the store, Sammy is displayed as tired of his closed-minded boss and the customers. As a result, he decides to quit his job on a whim, demonstrating Sammy’s immaturity and carelessness. Although it appears that Sammy has only a single motivation behind this bold decision—to get the girls’ attention—when closely analyzed, Sammy’s description of the customers and his attitude towards the store reveals to the reader that he has been fed up with this lifestyle long before…

In the short story “A&P” by John Updike the protagonist, a nineteen year old named Sammy, works a dead-end job at a grocery store, which his parents arranged for him. Sammy’s attitude towards the job is expressed through extremely descriptive imagery of three young ladies and the customers who frequent his work place. His apathetic view on his employment area and society as a whole eventually build him up to resign from his job, and he only acts upon this urge after being grasped by the chains of love, and his own desperations. Sammy’s evolution during this coming-of-age experience satirizes the traditional young and naïve teenage mind through Sammy’s expressions of nonconformity, his place in society, and his perceived future. Three girls…
