In the 70’s there was Nixon’s Watergate that was dealt with, in the 80’s it was the Iran Contra Affair, and in the 90’s it was the First Gulf War. TV played a huge role in both entertaining the public but also subtly passed on social norms that were still alien to the public. “The Associate” by John Grisham is a genuinely fantastic book. The novel tells the tale of a young law school student, Kyle Mcavoy, who is blackmailed by experienced and perilous extortionists into joining the major law firm, Scully & Pershing. He is then forced to steal confidential information from his firm regarding a multi-billion dollar, military jet contract. The novel has many characteristics which contribute to the stories’ greatness, action and suspense packed pages, the relatability to Kyle Mcavoy and the surprising and unpredictable path the author went on to develop the plot. I wish we had more of a timeline from when the two had their conversation and when Joe went to HR. Just because Bob told Joe “to do his job” is not a hostile work environment. Bob is his boss and Joe questioned him (I would be mad too) and if he had a stern tone with him that is not a hostile work environment. If having a stern tone is the making of a hostile work environment then every unit I have been in would be hostile.
