One of Eisenhower’s ideas part of the foreign policy was to contain communism and prevent a domino effect which is if one country fell to communism, so would another and another and so on. Eisenhower thought that containment was not enough to stop Communism expansion, and therefore created a policy known as Massive Retaliation. Another important aspect of Eisenhower's foreign policy plan was to improve US-Soviet relationship with each other. Eisenhower agreed to have a meeting with Soviet Union in July 1955 at Geneva, Switzerland but there were no boundaries about other international issues and arms control. The meeting helped reduce some tension between the two nations but has risen again when the U-2 plane flown in a covert operation was shot down by the Soviets (Ferguson 39). Eisenhower relied on covert missions by the CIA when handling many foreign affairs. Also Eisenhower devised the Eisenhower Doctrine which stated that a nation could request economic and military assistance from the United States if it was being attacked by a communist nation. Eisenhower promised in his campaign that he would end the Korean War in which he did on July 27, 1953 when an armistice was signed. Eisenhower did want to stay out of the Vietnam War but did help the French in war costs. After France losing, Eisenhower went to the Geneva conference to settle the land of South Vietnam at the 17th parallel(Ferguson 40). Eisenhower did really well handling foreign policy affairs.
