Due to his lack of sufficient funds and his friend's recommendation, he enrolled into West Point Academy in 1911. At the academy, Eisenhower received moderately average grades and participated in a wide variety of the sports available to him. His leg injury not only held him back from being able to join the West Point baseball team, it also caused him great difficulty in being assigned to the military. Initially, Eisenhower was informed he would not be allowed into the military at all, but he managed to negotiate himself into an infantry position. His first commission was to join with his regiment in San Antonio, Texas in 1916. Shortly after, Eisenhower met Mamie Geneva Doud, a small but feisty and beautiful young woman six years younger than him. On Valentine's Day of the same year, he proposed to Mamie and married her only 4 months later on July 1st. In September of the next year, Mamie gave birth to their first son, Doud Dwight Eisenhower. After the United States entered World War I, Eisenhower quickly made a request to be sent onto the war front but was promptly turned down and moved to domestic positions, first in Kansas then later in Maryland.
