Personal Background: Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890 in Denison, Texas. His parents were David Eisenhower and Ida Eisenhower. Dwight was the third of seven children, which were all boys. At the age 4 he lost his younger brother who died of diphtheria. In high school, Eisenhower played some sports for Abilene High School which was football and baseball. He graduated from high school in 1909. Soon after that he started working for his dad and uncle and also became a firefighter. All the money that he was making was going to his brother (Edgar) tuition. The two boys had made a deal which was that Eisenhower would pay for 2 years and then they would switch roles and his brother would pay for his tuition. That happened in 1948 about two years went by and he left so that he could accept an appointment as the first Supreme Allied Commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It was then that people from the Republican party encouraged him to run for the President of the united states. He took the thought into consideration and in 1952 retired from the active service and announced that he was going to run for the Republican Party nomination. As we all know on November 4, 1952 Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected the president of the United States. He wasted no time getting to work in the white house. He went about domestic policies about the same way that Roosevelt did. He established peace with the South Korean border. A big thing that was happening also is the developing of atomic bombs. He gave what is now pretty famous “Atoms for Peace” speech. What he was wanting was to use these bombs for peaceful uses and not to use them as a weapon.
