Campaigning under the slogan “I like Ike” Eisenhower won a sweeping victory for president along with his running mate for vice president Richard M. Nixon. During his presidency Eisenhower focused on creating peace with domestic affairs as well as foreign. He instituted new laws for the government such as the while keeping a lot of the New Deal programs. In foreign affairs he tried to relieve tension with the Russians as well as keep peace with the other nations. In 1953 he orchestrated a truce that brought peace to South Korea's border and also that year he made his famous ” Atoms for Peace” speech that he stated instead of using nuclear research to make destructive weapons they should use them to create peace. To that end Eisenhower met with Russian, British and French leaders at the Geneva Conference to further quell nuclear warfare. In 1956 Eisenhower was elected to a second term winning by an even larger margin than before. Over the course of his second term he continued to promote his Atoms for Peace Program. After his presidency, Eisenhower retired to a farm in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with his wife,Mamie. For the remainder of his life he kept an office at Gettysburg College holding meetings and writing memoirs. He died on March 28 in 1969 at Walter Reed Army Hospital due to a heart related illness.
