Socrates believed in the value of questioning one’s ambitions and moral, “To find yourself, think for yourself.” (Goodreads). In a lecture hall, the professor dims the light to prepare the class for a discussion. The professor will neither be leading nor judging the class responses, but he or she would push the discussion to the limit by questioning the reasoning and judgment of the responder in order to, “build truth back up” (Stanford). The objective of engaging in such a practice is to simulate a stimulating and safe environment in which the students are pushed to critique not merely their choices, but the logic behind their thinking process. Young students and grown-ups alike are both prone to be absorbed in the shallow treading through their daily responsiblities and pleasures. When the time comes to be meticulous and rigorous, those abilities to be thoughtful and analytical can aide in numerous ways. In the essay Dwelling in Possibilities by Mark Edmundson, Professor Edmundson’s is perplexed and troubled by the nonstop constance of the college generation. Mainly due to the student’s reliance on the advanced technology of smart devices, but much more in the student’s lack of ability and appreciation for that Socratic mindset. That stop, pause, rewind, and assess pathway in going about their daily hurdles or the pursuit of their profession. Edmundson’s belief that his student’s inner ambitions paves a many opportunies and experiences, yet his priority lies in hopes that the young scholars are able to develop that Socratic taste in all aspects of life: self-reflection, logic, decison making, and the pursuit of ambitious
