Dweck Argumentative Essay

Risks are all about choices and that is what Dweck stresses about mindsets: you have a choice. “Mindsets are just beliefs. They’re powerful beliefs, but they’re just something in your mind, and you can change your mind”(Dweck, 2016, p. 16), Is there is a choice to be a learner or non learner? Dweck points out that one can become a non learner if they continue to have a fixed mindset. At an early age if children become afraid of failure because of being challenged they may become afraid of being smart. It is important to understand that most with a fixed mindset do want to succeed, but the issue is if they are not in the growth mindset they are not using their success to stretch themselves and becoming smarter (Dweck, 2016, p. 17). Since the beginning of time, achieving success has always been a group effort. Whether it be building the Pyramids or the White House, nothing over the course of history has ever been completed by one person alone. There is always help, whether it be in the form of someone acting on another individual's behalf or supporting someone by sharing advice or lending an encouraging word. Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer is a work that reveals the tendency of people to fail at helping and supporting unique or unordinary individuals find a way to fit into a materialistic society that seemingly contradicts everything they stand for.
