Duty to Self vs. Humanity in Frankenstein From the point that Victor Frankenstein creates the monster until the end of the book, Victor experiences a conflict over the responsibility of what he created. Frankenstein first created his monster as a science experiment while studying anatomy, however it soon became much more than a science experiment. Once Victor gave life to his creation, he not only assumed a responsibility to himself, but also a responsibility to humanity. These responsibilities create much internal and external conflict which dictate his actions for the rest of the book, and his final actions. Then, the monster asks Victor to create a female companion, and insists that if he does, the monster and his companion will leave for the South American jungle. He also tells Victor that if he has a companion, he will no longer feel any loneliness, and will not kill anyone. This creates a compelling argument, as the monster will escape Victor’s sight and proximity to civilization. When Victor returns to land the next day, he is convicted of murder of Henry Clerval, whose corpse was found on the beach that same morning. Victor becomes ill because of the shock and guilt of Henry's death; when he wakes up, he finds himself in prison. Once he is released, he becomes paranoid about seeing his monster again. His paranoia only increases until the wedding day, as he believes that the monster will try to attack him over not keeping his promise. However, the monster actually attacks and kills his newly-wedded wife, Elizabeth, while he is out looking for the monster.
