Durshine: A Short Story

Improved Essays
April 18th: the day almost everyone in this secluded town known as Durshine has their calendars marked for. The exciting day that NASA is supposed to announce it’s newest find! And everyone seems to care… except for our careless teenage boy Tommy.
“Can you shut that up?” Tommy grumbled in agitation as he heard for the thousandth time the TV blare details on the event happening later this day.
“Sorry hunny,” Tommy’s mom, Marissa, apologized. “It’s just so thrilling! I can’t wait to hear what they found! Aren’t you excited?” She asked enthusiastically. Her only son starred with a blank expression as an answer. He’d grown sick of hearing about the excitement that had gone around every since NASA made the stupid announcement.

“I’m dying of anticipation.”

At first, Tommy found himself startled by the note, but as he thought further, he decided it was all too easy to type up a fake note from the “future” and place it here for some sucker who’d believe it. Tommy decided he would not be that sucker. He did however store the note carefully in his backpack... just in case.

Tommy’s day at school began with chemistry, much to his disdain. He preferred biology plus the class was kind of depressing. The only upside to the whole ordeal was the fact that he was seated with his best friend, Michael. Michael happened to be a chemistry geek, which worked out for Tommy.

“Hey Tom” Michael greeted him as he entered the classroom.

“Hey there Michael” Tommy greeted back and took his respective seat. “You might like something I found today on the way here.” He said as he reached for the paper he discovered earlier. Michael took the note from Tommy and examined it carefully.

“Hm. It’s interesting, but it can easily be fake. Doesn’t take a genius to type up an 85 word note.” Michael critiqued.

“Yea, I know. The concept just intrigues me, ya know? Like being contacted by the future, if it all possible, could be super cool.” Tommy said as the bell rang and Mr. Rodgers, the class teacher, stepped into the

“Hi Mr. Rodgers,” he greeted as he spotted the witty teacher, “you wanted to see me?”

Mr. Rodgers spun around to match the voice with a face. He spotted Tommy, and his eyes widened. “Oh, yes! Hi Tommy, thanks for coming by. Hope I’m not taking up too much of your exciting after school teenage life!” He lightly joked with Tommy.

Tommy decided to make him feel good about his joke and give a light chuckle. Nevertheless, he just wanted to get to the point of this… meeting.

“Not a problem Sir. So… what did you... need?”

Mr. Rodgers paused and met his gaze. “I happened to overhear your conversation with your buddy Michael earlier before class began, and I was intrigued as well. Can I see this note you found?”

Tommy tentatively handed over said note and Mr. Rodgers examined it carefully.

“Tommy boy, do you know what this is?” Mr. Rodgers said in a tone of unbelief.

“Um...a prank?”

“N-no, this- this is so much more! Tommy, thank you! I know you don’t know what for and I can’t tell you much but you’ve found the Key!” He exclaimed.

“The Key?” Tommy asked, confused.

“Yes! C’mon boy! We’ve got to get to the NASA
