Durkheim's Three Types Of Suicides Anomiic And Altruistic

Durkheim identifies several features when he explains what social facts are. He explains that “social fact exist separately from the individual effects” (207). Since a social fact could be external to the individual Durkheim relates this to suicide. According to Durkheim there is three types of suicides anomic, egoistic and altruistic. Suicides occur for different reasons egoistic suicides occur when an individual doesn’t feel that they belong or that they are socially accepted and integrated in society. An example could be when an individual can’t reach the goal that they been attempting to pursing and therefore the individual may begin to feel helpless. Durkheim expresses “All man’s pleasure in acting, moving and exerting himself implies the sense that his efforts are not in vain and that by walking he has advanced. However, one does not advance when one walks towards no goal, or – which is the same thing—when his goal is infinity” (256). Lastly, anomic suicide is a suicide that takes place because of a spontaneous event that stresses the individual therefore making it hard for the individual to cope with the situation leading to suicide.
