Suicide Rates

Suicide is frequently believed to be an individual act, however, Emile Durkheim proposes it as a social fact that is dictated by society. Suicide is higher for men than women, single versus married, times of peace over war, and Protestants more so than Catholics and Jews. Such examples indicate that genetics are not the sole role for suicide and these differences between demographics are caused by society. Abrupt changes in economic activity are another factor in suicide rates, and, contradictory, that includes fortunate crises. A higher GDP, on average, correlates with higher suicide rates. For example, the United States and Japan have higher suicide rates than Mexico and Philippines. Mexico and the Philippines are also majority Catholic nations, …show more content…
They also have diminished economies with Mexico at $16,558 GDP/cap and the Philippines at $4,140 GDP/cap. Durkheim believes “poverty may even be considered a protection” (Durkheim, From Suicide: A Study in Sociology, pg. 125) towards suicide. Consequently, the deficient incomes of the Philippines and Mexico keep people in place with low expectations. These counties have a more collectivist society than the United States and “society alone can play this moderating role” (Durkheim, From Suicide: A Study in Sociology, pg. 127) that assigns a path for each individual. Fortunately, those individuals respect and follow the roles society moderates and, therefore, constitute a stable equilibrium. The collectivist society is bolstered by Catholicism dominating both the Philippines and Mexico. Unlike Protestantism, Catholicism accentuates one interpretation of the bible. Henceforth, followers of that religion are intuitively closer to each other and are shielded from the loneliness that plagues other societies. Durkheim’s theory definitively explains the low suicide rates in Mexico and the Philippines, but fails to do so in

In the video lecture, Introduction to Sociology, Ann Swidler discusses the linkage between a community and suicide. According to Ann Swidler, Sociology is the study of principles of how social life works and how it differs in each area. She claims that even though suicide is the the most lonely, personal, and individualized thing one can do, but social forces have a great effect on the action. For example, one study shows that Protestants had the most suicides while both Catholic and Jews had low rates. This is because Protestants encourage people to think for themselves and interpret the Bible in their own way resulting in individualism and lack of groupings while Catholics were controlled by priests and Jews were in ghettos.…

Suicide rates among the AI/AN population age fifteen to thirty-four years is almost 250% higher the general population and suicide is now the second leading cause of death for AI/ANs (Gray & McCullagh, 2014). Gray and McCullagh (2014), report that mental and behavioral health problems, stressful life events, and substance abuse are directly related to an increased suicide risk and unfortunately many AI/AN communities are affected by these risk factors in combination with more (drug and alcohol use, violence exposure, and limited resources). One theory as to why there is such a high suicide rate among AI/AN youth, as stated by Gray and McCullagh (2014), “is that there is a disconnect and a sense of loss of belonging to both their culture and…

Emile Durkheim – Suicide Circa one million people commit suicide every year, according to the World Health Organization. In 2012 in Ireland the rate of suicide was between 11 and 12 people per 100,000 (National Suicide Research Foundation, 2012, www.nsrf.ie). Emile Durkheim engaged in research of the rates of suicide in France, England and Denmark in 1869. He believed that while suicide was an act tied to the individual, the causes had links to many different social factors. He was not so much concerned with the personality traits of individuals who commit suicide, he was more so looking at the rate of suicide per country.…

Race and Its Influence on Suicide To commit suicide is to make the decision to take one’s own life. Nearly 30,000 Americans make this decision each year (Rockett, Wang, Stack, De Leo, Frost, Ducatman & Kaputsa, 2010). Like several other issues in the United States, there is a gap in suicide rates. There are numerous factors that are thought to be correlated with suicide rates. Examples of things that could influence the decision to commit suicide include age, race, ethnicity, income, education, and socioeconomic background (Rockett et al., 2010).…

Six studies done in Africa (Zimbabwe, Lesotho), Asia, (Indonesia and Pakistan) and Latin America (Brazil and Chile) showed a direct correlation between poverty and mental health problems (World Health Organization). Poor people are at more likely to suffer from depression due to the hardships they face because of their poverty and their lack of adequate care (Cruz). Paulo Rossi Menezes (Poor Mental Health), who is a professor of medicine at the University of Sao Paulo, expresses that the two are closely linked: “There is a clear relationship between standard of living and common mental disorders.” This ties poverty into the issue more directly as the research shows that those in impoverished countries are more likely to develop a mental illness that often goes untreated (Mental Health in Developing Countries). So to solve the issues of mental health, poverty needs to be seriously addressed as well.…

Three aspects of each country were compared. The aspects being, the cohesiveness of a social group in which an individual may belong, a person 's standing within society and a person 's religious, social and occupational standings. As a result of his research durkheim revealed 10 findings in which can be used to explain from a sociological point of view why suicide occurs. Firstly he found that if there is a higher integration level, integration meaning how valued a person feels to the group and how connected they are, they will feel loved and wanted therefore suicide would be less admired, however, if there is a low integration level they will feel left out and the feeling worthless will be stronger thus resulting in a higher suicide tendency. In addition he found that an individual with a religious standing or connection is less likely to commit suicide than an individual without a religious belief.…

If one couple is divorced, it is a personal trouble, but if hundreds of couples are divorced, it would be public issue. According to Emile Durkheim (1897), suicide is an individual behavior, but it is also a social phenomenon because there are patterns in the kinds of people who commit suicide. The critical knowledge provided by social science might grant people the chance to relate their personal troubles to wider public issues: to see the links between their everyday difficulties and social structures and processes (Puga, Puga, Easthope, & Taylor, 2017, p.26). To understand personal trouble, we must put it in the context of the…

There are many different approaches to which the conflict perspective can be used to explain suicide. Some of these being social class, gender, and race or ethnicity. Social class pressure on an individual may affects the rates of suicide among personnel from lower-income families when it is perceived by the individual he/she has fewer educational or employment opportunities and little hope for his/her near future (Anderson 2009). However, social class inequality cannot alone explain suicide among individuals in society. Gender can also have an impact on suicide in today’s society.…

The reducing integration between societies and cultures and its outcomes are more difficult to take in to account, which leaves the society oblivious to the outcomes. However, these outcomes of the reducing social and cultural integration are definitely obvious when they occur. Some obvious indications of these outcomes are explosives being set off in Bali and London, crowd uproars taking place in Paris and Sydney, and bombs being dropped on Afghan and Iraqi. In other words, globalization and terrorism is at fault for all of this. According to Emile Durkheim’s book Suicide, to make sense of suicides themselves and the reason for the dissimilar suicide measures in different places, there should first be a search and recognition of what factors might have given rise to suicide nationally before inferring the effects of suicide nationally.…
