People associated their own meaning to a product (243). This is known as fetishism of a commodity. “Requiem for the American Dream” illustrates this through the advertising industry. Chomsky states that ads are a way to create consumers and tries to control people (Hutchison & Nyks, 2015). The advertising industry tries to sell products by convincing people that their lives would be better if they had that product and as a result people engage in consumerism (Hutchinson & Nyks, 2015). This is also shown in the film “Eating in the Early Industrial Revolution” when the narrator speaks about the process of bread and how whiter bread meant it was better, when in fact it doesn’t mean anything.
In conclusion, Marx saw that there was always conflict in society. He believed that people were unconscious of their own agency. Marx envisioned that communism would be the last stage of the development of labour, and that it would resolve many problems that are being experienced today, but until today, we are still living in a capitalist
