Suicide is a global phenomenon, according to the World Health Organization, estimates over 800,000 people die due to suicide each year (WHO 2017). Suicide is a self-directed violence against oneself, the effects are tragic and felt long after the individual has taken their own life. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reports; men die by suicide 3 ½ times more often than women; and, the rate of suicide is highest in middle age white males. There is no single cause for suicide, however conditions like depression, anxiety and substance abuse problems, especially when unaddressed, are linked to increased risk for suicide. This is done by focusing on the socioemotional structure of the individual, what determines the protective and harmful sides of human interactions. The authors begin with two fundamental principles of Durkheim’s original theory; the structure of any social pathology is directly related to the structure of social relationships; and social integration, suggesting the structure and content of social relationships produce a socioemotional structure that shapes the structure of suicide. Argue Durkheim’s concepts govern the socioemotional theory of suicide, serving as a bridge between micro-level dynamics and the macro-level structural and cultural forces interacting with each other. Mueller and Abrutyn maintain Durkheim’s basic concepts are still important to the motivation of suicide related to the structure of social relationships. Clarifying, culture and emotion are the two issues missing from this theory. Suggesting additional research on suicides, must consider the emotional quality and content of relationships. Durkheim’s findings haven’t answered all the questions surrounding this complex issue however, the importance of social integration still holds today. Currently, many organizations worldwide are raising an awareness and breaking the stigma associated with suicide and making progress in the prevention of suicide. In my opinion, we need to view a person who has attempted suicide with compassion, understanding and without judgment.
