According to Durkheim, the role of division of labor also known as economic specialization was something that society needed and was not necessarily bad for neither the individual interest or the society’s common good. “For instance, Durkheim disagreed with the concept of alienation and exploitation caused by the capitalism system. Instead, he believed that the division of labor allows laborers to come together as they see themselves as part of the society- being part of the bigger picture. For example, based on this theory, a minimum waged worker in a warehouse will not feel alienated because he/she may feel contributing to the economy and wellbeing of their company.
In the other hand, Marx was an economist and more of a conflict theorist. He argued that the division of labor created the separation of the society into classes, such as the Bourgeoisie class who predominantly controlled the means of production as well as owing private properties and the Proletariat class who was mostly the working and poor class. Furthermore, it contributes to the social order through the creation of laws and regulations. As we progress and the society experiences a great evaluation, many crimes go against our social norms. The constant presence of laws is needed in order to keep the security and safety of people(p120). Based on Durkheim’s theory, crime is also necessary and in some extent inevitable for a society because it is the most effective way to bring a social change. For instance, when the society’s collective belief and sentiments are tested, social change arises. One recent example is the new movement of Black Lives Matter (BLM) with the purpose to stop the police brutality against black people. This movement is trying to change the police profiling, as well as the stereotype that every black person is doing an illegal act which make him/her a suspect.
