The dungeon floor begins to shake as you hear a menacing roar from beyond the large metal doors. What could this possibly be? You and your party draw their weapons and ready your spells as a colossal Minotaur tears through the doors like tissue paper and locks onto you. It begins to charge, what do you do? When I was twelve years old I spent the night at my best friend’s house, as I often did on weekends, and was introduced to a game known as “Dungeons and Dragons” by my friend’s older brother. Once introduced to this game, my life was forever changed. Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop fantasy role-playing game in which you assume a character in a medieval world controlled by someone known as the “Dungeon Master." What truly makes this game incredible is the fact that you can quite literally use your imagination to control the entire situation. The team building, creative problem solving and imaginative aspects of the game truly impacted the person I have become.

Typically, you play the game in a party of four or five, with each person playing a unique character with its own special abilities that benefit the entire team. For example, I discovered that by shooting the fire elemental in it’s white, hot core you could immobilize it for a few moments. In addition, I created a makeshift grappling hook using fifty feet of rope and a bow and arrow. Many people today live with very one-track minds, but I’d like to believe this game has changed how I think and view situations. I don’t see only one way to solve a problem and know that I have many creative options at my disposal.
