Brock Turner's Argumentative Essay

On January 17th, 2015, Brock Turner, a 20-year-old Stanford freshman, sexually assaulted a 23-year-old unconscious woman behind a dumpster located near a house party. The victim, who decided to not state her name, described in a letter she read aloud in court that her younger sister was visiting for the weekend and she planned to stay home due to working full time. Her sister was going to a nearby party with some friends that night and knowing it was her only night with her sister she decided to go as well. She followed up by saying that her sister teased her for wearing a beige cardigan to a party, as she put it, "like a librarian" and admitted to drinking too much too fast. In America alone, a woman gets raped every 2 minutes, that 's 30 women every hour, and 720 women in a day. Thousands of perpetrators get away with rape and in my opinion, this is because of cases such as Brock Turner 's who had his punishment dropped from 14 years to just six months which has now turned to three because of "good behavior". It is also because of judges like Judge Aaron Persky who let criminals get away with rape because of things such as being successful and a social status. Just because someone who is successful, privileged, and young, committed a crime they regret doesn 't mean that their punishment should be light. The victim stated in the letter that she feels that if she wouldn 't have gone, nothing would have happened but that then she realizes it would have happened, just to someone else. Someone who is drunk and unconscious should not be taken advantage of, they are still a person who should be respected no matter the circumstances.
