If you've ever set foot in a gym, there is no way that you have missed out on the big rack of dumbbells that they have undoubtedly prominently on display. There is a reason why every gym worth its own salt has a nice set of cheap dumbbells. Dumbbells are free weights and any exercise involving free weights will always be one heck of a lot better than any exercise that doesn't involve free weights. If you're in a machine and you're stuck in the motion that the machine lets you make, whether it be with your arms or your legs, then you are not getting the full benefit of your workout.

Exercises that involve free weights will give you a much better workout. The reason for this is simple. Free weights force you to keep the weights balanced. This makes all the difference. When you are holding a dumbbell, both of your arms' muscles have to constantly correct for all the movement caused by gravity pulling the dumbbells down. No machine can ever hold a candle to any exercise that involves dumbbells. Whenever I go to the gym, I will skip most machines and go right to the free weight section instead.

But why would you want to be a gym member if you can also have dumbbells at home. I don't see the point of being a member of a gym and paying a

But they will cost you at least twenty five bucks. But weights at this price point will not give you the best handling. Often they will rattle a bit as you wield them. That's just what you get for spending as little as possible. If you want some quality, you'll have to spend at least fifty dollars. This is about as cheap as it gets for a high quality, durable set of iron cast, adjustable dumbbells. Mind the word 'adjustable', because that one is really important here. Dumbbells are useless if you can not adjust the weight of them by adding weight plates. When performing exercises, your strength is constantly increasing. You'll want to be able to add on weight plates to increase the

How to Get a Good Workout in the Pool Working out in the pool might not seem like the most effective way to slim down and shape up, but a pool-based workout burns a surprising number of calories, boosts your metabolism, works every muscle in your body, and improves your over-all fitness level. Working out in the swimming pool is so effective because water provides natural resistance – as it is almost 800 times denser than air – so each movement that you make while submerged in water works your muscles harder than doing similar cardio- or strength-based exercise on dry-land. Getting Started Most people think that working out in the pool consists of jumping in and swimming a few lengths, but getting a decent workout in the pool requires a bit more effort. Training in…

Kettlebells are a type of dumbbell that are round with a flat base with an arced handle. The design of the kettlebell allows for various movements of swings, presses, or pulling. Due to the irregular distribution of weight in a kettlebell, the body is required to stabilize and counter balance itself using different strengths of the upper, lower, and core sections. The constant need to stabilize generates a center of gravity that can change depending on how the kettlebell is held and moved. The overall purpose of the free weight is to offer a dynamic training of the body to improve overall strength, increase mobility, and cardio endurance while integrating all areas of muscle.…

Lifting has been around since prehistoric times. “For many prehistoric tribes, the traditional test of manhood was the lifting of a special rock” (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2016, para. 1). Due to the fact that these prehistoric human beings did not have the science behind lifting, there is large possibility that there were many injuries from this ancient form of lifting. The rate of injuries in weight training may be higher than that of injuries in mundane sports like table tennis, but there are many solutions that can prevent most if not all injuries in weight…

There are several variations of the bench press exercises to include the wide-grip bench press, close-grip bench press, incline bench press, decline bench press, dumbbell chest press, reverse-grip bench press or machine-based. The prime movers in the bench press are the pectoralis major, triceps brachii, and the anterior deltoid, with the medial deltoid and rectus abdominis acting as a stabilizer muscle (Kellis et al., 1998). Common Injuries Although bench press exercises are the blueprint of upper-body strength and power gains, injuries are common, not just with competitive weightlifters like bodybuilders and powerlifters, also regular recreational lifters. Although this may be a standard feature to most any gym, ASU goes far beyond a mere standard with the accommodations they provide their students who want to lift and stay in shape. When you enter the gym on the first level you immediately see a variety of racked weights and benches to use, along with other machines that if open, are available to all students. As you continue to walk down the first level of the facility you will see another gym. This was part of the extension Arizona State provided the SDFC in 2013 (Tempe Facilities). This gym is filled with all of the latest lifting technology and plenty of space is provided for other physical activity such as yoga or circuit training which are both important to the complex.…
