During World War 1 alone, there was an estimated 14,000,000 deaths of those who fought in the war and also civilian casualties. In the Spanish-American War, there was approximately 5,000 American deaths, 12,000 Filipino soldiers dead and about 100,000 civilian casualties. In the Vietnam war, there was only about 58,000 American casualties, in comparison to Vietnam’s 2,000,000 casualties. The Vietnam war lasted 19 years. The writers of each of these pieces have experienced war in some way, shape or form. In these few excerpts and poems the writers express their feelings and thoughts through writing and they all do it in different ways. The story gives readers an idea and a sense of what it was like to carry all of the things that they carried as soldiers. He gives the reader the exact weight of everything that was carried. In “War is Kind” a poem from the book War is Kind and Other Lines, written by Stephen Crane and “Dulce et Decorum Est” as mentioned before, irony is used by these two writers to protest war. In “War is Kind”, Crane conveys irony with the title itself. Obviously, war is not kind in any way, shape or form. In a way, Crane is being sarcastic with the title, because in stanza 4, line 3 he writes “These men were born to drill and die point for them the virtue of slaughter, make plain to them the excellence of killing and a field where a thousand corpses lie.” (Crane). This, in no way, displays that war is kind. This describes the torment the soldiers went through and how it destroyed their mentality. This highlights the fact that war is not kind, due to the pain and suffering the soldiers had to go through. Additionally in “Dulce et Decorum Est” irony is displayed in a different way. In “Dulce et Decorum Est” irony is displayed in a* different way. The term “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori” is latin for it is sweet and right to die for you country. Owen is basically implying that it is sweet and right to die for your country, but it’s really not. That’s what makes this ironic.
