For my field study report I decided to study Duke University 's men 's basketball team. The particular area I will be focusing on is recruiting. Duke University is a private institution in Durham, North Carolina. Duke competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) division 1. Duke competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) against other perennial basketball powers. Duke is coached by the legendary Mike Krzyzweski or Coach K for short, where he has been the head man since 1980. Over Coach K 's entire coaching career he has amassed over 1,051 wins making him the all-time winningest coach in division 1 basketball history and arguably the best coach of all-time in his profession. To become the best, Coach K had to recruit the right prospective students to Duke that would buy in to his philosophies and would become a program fit. Duke 's recruiting classes are ranked in the top 10 nationally year in and year out. For my field study I had the opportunity to speak with former Duke stand-out William Avery. Avery chose Duke over the University of Kentucky in 1997. William Avery and I are both from the same hometown Augusta, Georgia. He was more than happy to share his Duke experience with me. Will spoke with me and gave full detail on his recruiting experience. The 1997 recruiting class was ranked #1 nationally.
