Duke Scandal: A Short Story

Duke Scandal
It was a normal day on the Duke campus, a beautiful day to be exact. It was sunny, a little bit windy, and smelt like fresh cut grass. Five friends were on their way to their first class of the day, which was the worst class of the day too. They always just pushed through it though because it was senior year and they just needed to get it over with so they could start their lives. As they walked into class they noticed a sign with a pile of papers beside it. The sign read “Students, I am offering an internship to three students. You will get the opportunity to work under me and get a test of what the medical field is really like. I will get back to you in a timely manner once you turn the application in. Thank you in advance.” The beautiful Kansas, top of her

Rachel and Beth decided then that they would apply for it too and see what the professor would do. So the next day the girls turned in their applications. Surprisingly, he kept them and by the

end of class he still kept them so everyone was a little more hopeful. These two girls were also smart and pretty high up in class rank, but still couldn’t stand a chance against Kansas. That night the friends got together to hangout and Rachel and Beth had said information for the group. The professor sent them both an email, that was pretty much the same email except he changed the names and said that they both got denied.
All the friends came to the conclusion that he must be sexist then, so all the girls made the two boys apply to see if their assumption was right. The girls had to fill out the applications for the boys because they actually had no desire to apply for the internship because who would actually want to work with the horrible, Professor Steven. They emailed the applications to the Professor and waited patiently. It took 24 hours, but they got the response which was also a big no, they didn’t get it. After that they were

Intern Nation by author Ross Perlin analyzes the current state of internships in astoundingly immensedetail. In specific, Perlin focuses on the variety of internships, including “the good, the bad, and the ugly; the paid and the unpaid; the ostensibly academic and the completely untethered; part-time internships lasting a few weeks and full-time ones last a year” (XVI). These elements are described through first-hand accounts; for example, the interns at Disney World and the government interns on Capitol Hills. These elements are also described through in-depth investigation; for example, the 18 percent of interns who work without pay or the evidence of companies and government organizations firing full-time paid staff and replacing them with…

Yet, these football players are committing crimes of sexual assault to women, and the cases have been covered to protect the “good” name of the school. Taking a look back at Allison Huguet’s's story, we know she was raped by her trusted friend, Beau. She felt protected by him and never thought she would have to fear him. As heartbreaking as it is, what's even worse is how gender was institutionalized within this text. The first prime example of gender institutionalization was when Allison’s lifestyle was changed.…

I strongly disagree with allowing trans males in an all women’s…

Vivus which means back to life in Latin, is the name of a company that is trying to create and distribute a “cure” for female sexual dysfunction. They originally produced and sold drugs to help men with erectile dysfunction and now they have moved on to drugs for female sexual dysfunction. The pharmaceutical company can’t make a drug for something that is not considered a disease or disorder, so Vivus pushes the idea that women’s lack of sexual arousal during sex like lack of lubrication, and lack of orgasm, is a sexual dysfunction that needs to be fixed. They push this idea so that they can sell their drugs and make a profit. When asked how female sexual dysfunction even came about or how it became considered a dysfunction, no one who worked…

At our last class session, we decided to meet as a group on thursday to discuss our plans for the wooden compost bins, and to get information for how we take action on how we can make it possible for us to go through with our plans. I met Vanessa and Alyssa outside of Dudley Moorhead Hall, two hours before our class starts, and we began to find a place to sit down and talk about what we need to do. Finally, we went up to the second floor of Dudley Moorhead Hall, where the sociology office was located, and we asked the front desk about who can we talk to for going forward with our idea of the wooden compost bin. The front desk gave us a map, and pointed at the a building that we needed go to, if we wanted to talk to someone that can help us.…

The concern for many students is finding and landing a job after graduation, and one particularly fantastic way towards getting a job is obtaining an internship opportunity during school. In terms of internship opportunities, there are many different types and varieties such as volunteer, stipend, and paid and unpaid internships. Anya Kamenetz, a columnist for The Village Voice, firmly believes, though, that unpaid internships has many downfalls and disadvantages for students and for the economy as a whole. According her arguments, students should take paid internships or part-time jobs instead of unpaid internships. She emphasizes and brings up important notions that does require attention but, overall, unpaid internships actually goes beyond…

This lesson could be implemented along with my inquiry question, “what makes my family a family”, by giving students another lens to explore what makes their family different from other families. While the focus on this specific lesson is more on identifying characteristics of “places”, ideally, a further lesson would be implemented to expound on the idea that people (or families) shape the characteristic of the environment they live in. Following this would be another lesson that focuses on how different families shape their home environment in different ways (using the classroom family neighborhood as a reference). For the sake of time, this lesson introduces the concept of “characteristics” as a mini-lesson at the beginning of the lesson.…
