Jazz legend Duke Ellington once said, "A problem is a chance for you to do your best." I agree with Ellington's quote. His quote is extremely understandable and can be deciphered by those that are young and old. If I solve a complicated problem, then it gives me a chance to prove myself to my peers. Problems can be hard to solve, so I must always try my best to find a solution. In conclusion, this particular quote is a wonderful motivator for every individual.

Langston Hughes creates this poem by incorporating crucial details, words, and images to prove his point on the paradox he has created in the two worlds he identifies in his writing. Hughes reveals his inferior stature in the college he attends by stating he is the only “colored” male in his class. Not only that, Hughes takes time to explain that he returns home from the college by going “down into Harlem,” and traveling “up” to his room. The meticulous use of “down” and “up” emphasizes the transition from his inferior status at the white- dominated college to the his sanctity and dominance in his room writing his paper.…

Chapter One: “... but people aren't meant to be overly bright in everything.” (15) I selected this quote because it states something I need to keep in mind sometimes. I get extremely frustrated if I do not pick up on something right away or not at all; like origami or some math concepts. At the end of the day, it does not matter if someone excels at everything they do; what matters is that someone tried their best at everything they did. Chapter Two: “There’s nothing like a song about lost love to remind you how everything precious can slip from the hinges where you've hung it so careful.”…

In “The Harlem Dancer,” Claude McKay describes a woman who is performing to a crowd of youths through the eyes of an audience member. The narrator seems to be explaining everything that has to do with her body and appearance, rather than what she is actually thinking. He later realizes that she is unhappy while performing, though it is still unknown as to what the dancer is thinking. The use of tone and diction reveals that she is actually distancing herself from her reality due the traumatic experience of her ongoing objectification and victimization of predation.…

Jazz by Toni Morrison is set during the Harlem Renaissance, an era in which music, specifically Jazz music, was generating popularity, as well as controversy. Morrison incorporates the importance of music throughout the book in many ways, including, the style in which the narrator tells the story, for example, how characters were introduced and the way certain scenes were explained, as well as the language used. Although the structure of the novel is significant in understanding the role of jazz music in the novel, it is also important to understand the role that jazz had in the characters’ lives.
