Each hospital compared to its peers, had lower inpatient mortality, less patient complications, provided timely ER visits, kept expenses low and scored higher in patient satisfactions surveys (Truven, 2017).
Duke University Hospital became a reality back in the mid 1920s when James Buchanan Duke funded the transformation of Trinity College into Duke University and then into a teaching medical school and hospital. It wasn’t until 1930 that the hospital opened with 400 beds. Then in just 5 years, the AMA (American Medical Association) ranked Duke as one of the top 20 medical schools in the entire country.
Duke has taken their Mission of “Advancing Health Together” and placed it within their 2016-2020 strategic plan. Their 6 objectives over this timeframe are (Duke, 2015):
