Discussion Dugesia regeneration is happening and the response rate to stimuli can be observed. Planarians have the ability to fully regenerate demonstrating the fascinating study of stem cells and tissue regenerations. The regeneration of the planarian may require the planarian to reshape its form by finding the right proportion to acquire the right shape and size of its body to form a functional, bilaterally symmetrical anatomy. The regeneration period can vary with different species, some may take as short as a week to fully regenerates its body proportion while other may take longer. The model organism, Dugesia, is composed of adult stem cells that give rise to any other type of cells called neoblasts. This cell type makes up the most of the adult planarian and function to regenerate the planarian if it suffered from amputation. The function of the neoblasts is to replace the normal cells that are lost and to heal the wounded areas with new cells that rise from the stem cell, this process is called regeneration. At the wounded site of the planarian rapid division of new cells forms a blastema, which gives the …show more content…
The phototactic and sensory stimuli responses via the use of ocelli and the auricle respectively should be focused on for the future studies on the growth rates of the planarians as it undergoes the regeneration process until it is able to fully evolve into a complete planarian.
In conclusion, the complete regenerations of the Dugesia segments can be observed. The three segments of the planarian can successfully regenerate into three distinct planarians including the additional planarian from the posterior portion of the stock planarian after decapitation.
