Duel on Syrtis: The Summary The story “Duel On Syrtis” is about a challenging hunt on mars. It describes the journey of a hunter and the Martian he is hunting named Kreega. The hunter named, Riordan, goes to mars to go on the hunt for these Martian’s named “owlies”. Riordan starts his journey by going to a private office to have someone assist him in this journey. This person that will be assisting him on this journey is Wisby. Riordan believes it’s going to be an easy hunt but that is not the case. His journey starts off by looking for just any Owlie he can find. Wisby then tells him of a bigger better prize his ego then gets bigger as he tries to hunt this better Owlie named Kreega. The hunt becomes a cat and mouse game and a much longer journey then Riordan anticipated. He faces traps and short skirmishes with Kreega. The main reason for this hunt on his life is that he is supposed to be a challenge, he is an “…arrogant bastard”. (Anderson) The phrase arrogant bastard implies that he is cocky and nothing bothers him. The fact that he is running away from them shows that he is afraid of them. He doesn’t stand his ground. Kreega is the complete opposite of being arrogant. “Alone, alone. There was not another Martian for a hundred miles of emptiness.”. (Anderson) This shows how lonely he is which is why his attitude might come off arrogant because he is sad. He is a loner that is shy and is just looking for a friend but doesn’t want to start the conversation. During the chase there comes a turning point where the warrior inside of him comes out. He begins to make weapons and develop a strategy to destroy Riordan. Towards the end of the story he starts to fall back to being depressed when the only place left that he had was destroyed. The last laugh comes when he blacked out from being chocked and awakens moments
