When writing a poem a poet can twist a subject into whatever perspective they see fit. While Kilee Greethurst wrote her poems based on her experiences she opened up her thoughts and feelings to give the readers a wall of emotion and imagery. In order to portray these feelings of happiness and romance, she used the concept of bliss as her overall theme. All of Greethurst’s poems revolve around the idea of a blissful state of mind, creating a theme of happiness and love.…
Why did Dudley Randall choose the “Ballad of Birmingham” to captivate experience in poetic form?Randall chose it because he might of knew their family or they changed history. It got Randall attention because the girls were in a sacred place when it happened. Dudley Randall chose it because the girls changed history. Randall establishes a racial process as a kind of blossoming as he recounts the incident based on a historical event of the bombing.…
What was war back then? What do we all think of war? Do we think positively or negatively towards it? How was war, represented back then in contrast to the image we are currently vividly portrayed? A personal, intensive, thorough and individual method of answering these questions and graphically depicting these times is a personal favourite of mine, poetry.…
Ballad of Birmingham essay Police brutality, viscious k-9 dogs, powerful water hoses used forcefully, that was all part of the events in Birmingham during the march for freedom. I believe Dudley Randall chose these events to Emphasize the brutal events a peaceful protest in Birmingham, Alabama. Beatings and killings of innocent people, a very hard truth to swallow. These were the same people who bled the same blood as you. People who just wanted equal rights as people of opposite color.…
The folk ballad, “Lord Randall”, is a call-and-response narrative poem between a mother and her son. The plot of the story is revealed through their riveting conversation. Each stanza begins with the mother asking her son a question and ends with her son’s response. The incremental repetition in the poem shines through the second half of each question after the caesuras when the mother speaks and in the last line of each stanza except for the final line. In the first stanza, the mother asks her son where he has been and he tells her that he has been in the woods, but he is tired from hunting.…
“Fishhawk” was the first poem of the Classic of Poetry, the earliest poetry collection of East Asia (p.1322). In contrast to many poems in the “Airs of Domain” that propagated Confucianism, “Fishhawk” is a simple love poem. The poem revolves around a young man who was “tormented by his desire for a girl”(p.1322). While this poem is labeled as a “romantic folk song”(p.1322), the good use of literary elements, syntax, and language added a bit of tint to the love story.…

“The Charge of the Light Brigade” The poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson affected my understanding of real events because it tells you about the courage of the six hundred because they went on even though they knew someone had made a mistake. The Charge of the Light Brigade helped me understand real events because this was life during the war there was no time for thought about losing or death you just had to push through and fight. The poem was written about a charge by British forces across open terrain in Ukraine.…

The writing style in this poem includes long, descriptive lines. Having the long lines with the descriptions helps to let the reader know the way society thinks as well as describes the woman herself. Linda Pastan's "Jump Cabling" is a love story like many. " Jump Cabling" however, is a short poem about jump starting a car as a metaphor for an intimate love story between the two strangers. Pastan's poem uses a peculiar but important structure and form along with alliteration, metaphor, symbol, and allusion to bring the mundane affairs of romance to life. The poem itself is a metaphor for an intimate encounter the speaker has with a stranger. The author uses the woman's car breaking down and the man stopping to help along with the process of restarting the speaker's car as a metaphor for the intimate encounter, the cars a symbol for their bodies.…
This is the same reason why the memory of one’s lost dream might be extremely annoying. From beginning to end, the poem consists of various questions, making the reader perceive a naïve and anxious tone. The reader is also able to imagine the frustration and confusion in the author’s voice. Langston Hughes manages to hide a serious topic behind simple comparisons, indulging the reader into the poem’s analysis. An example of this technique is the comparison of a deferred dream with a festering sore.…
It creates a rhythmic flow in the writing and allows the reader to comprehend the main points of the poem. 2. The poem is strategically broken into stanzas to apply dual meanings to each line. If one was to only read a single line of a stanza, they would get a different understanding than if they read both lines. For instance, the second stanza in Steven’s poem reads, “nothing to stand in/ the way of the eye”.…
