Duckworth's Theory Of Grit

The word grit, according to some experts, is they believe that grit can be defined “as persistence, determination, and resilience” (npr.org). The theory behind grit is that is has been a term that is being used to see the possible success for a student. According to Angela Duckworth, her definition for grit is “The quality of being able to sustain your passion, and also work very hard at them, over really long periods of time”. Based on her way of defining grit, Duckworth’s research has shown that grit is a better method of predicting success than IQ test scores. With grit so far being seen as a method for student success, enough evidence has not been gathered to show certainty that grit can be taught at school. Although not much evidence …show more content…
The first few questions on the grit quiz were based on an individual, but in order to get the final results, personal in guration such as age and gender were asked in order to compare the individual to the rest of the world. In the world no one person can be the same, so in the way that results were given in the grit quiz, it does not seem like it can be a reliable test. Also according to some researches, they believe that grading kids on grittiness can raise a concern. At the University of Pennsylvania, professor Joan Goodman believes that grit should not define a person as a “good character trait” or “virtue”, (npr.org), because those words have a strong connotation that can possibly bring students down. For example if these words are used to define grittiness, kids who have grittiness may think they are seen as a good child, while on the other hand, those who don't have it may been seen as not the good child and this can increase the amount of failure in someone who believes they don't have grit. The ecological validity in the grit quiz did ask questions about gender age race and country, and the results provided can be used to see a trend in people and possibly find a solution that can be used to better reinforce grittiness at home or at school.
