Duckweed Grow Lab

Title:
See how nitrogen effects water habitats. eutrophication Aims:
To see what the effect of nitrogen has on aqcuatic plant growth
Hypothesis:
I think that the duckweed with some nitrogen will grow the best. Not full stock or half stock but around quarter or eith stock. This is because I think that to much nitrogen will be deadly for the plant but with some nitrogen it will grow better than duckweed without any nitrogen.
Method:
We took the top off of the coke bottles
We cleaned the coke bottles to ensure nothing would interfere with the investigation
We added river water to the coke bottles
Added 1 tablespoon of soil to each bottle
We then added our nutrient solution for nitrogen we used urea
We added 1/10 for the full

On the 2nd day of recording there was no growth in the duckweed showing that duckweed cant grow after 3 days in no stock water. On the 3rd day of recording the duckweed had a huge jump in growth as it was now at 13 duckweed plants. This shows that duckweed can grow in no stock water and has started off huge by gaining 8 duckweed plants. On the 4th day of recording there was 17 duckweed plants. Showing that duckweed can grow well with no nitrogen added. On the 5th day of recording the duckweed was at 18 plants. The growth has slowed dramatically to only 1 plant being added. On the 6th day of recording the duckweed had grown to 20 plants. This shows that duckweed can grow in water with no added nitrogen. The duckweed is still growing but a lot slower than at the start of the investigation. On the 7th day of recording the duckweed had grown to 22. This shows that duckweed can grow successfully in water with no added nitrogen. It also had a huge start with growing 8 plants in 3 days but then slowed down dramatically to only adding one or two duckweed plants each …show more content…
On the 2nd day recording the duckweed still had 5 duckweed plants. This was probably because the duckweed wouldn’t have grown straight away as it has only just been put in a new environment and would take some time to adapt so it did no grow in the first 3 days. On the 3rd day of recording the duckweed had grown to 8 plants. This may have been because the duckweed has adapted to the new environment and has started to grow in the plentiful nitrogen in the water. On the 4th day of recording the duckweed had stayed at 8 plants. This may have been because the duckweed has taken as much nitrogen as it needs but now the water has to much nitrogen and is struggling to live. On the 5th day recording the the duckweed has grown to 9 showing that it can live in the half stock but is growing slowly and is struggling. On the 6th day of recording the duckweed has dropped to 7 plants. This is probably because the nitrogen is too much and is starting to kill off the duckweed as there is too much making the water deadly. On the 7th day of recording the duckweed had died completely in the ½ stock bottles. This was probably because there was too much nitrogen un the bottles so the duckweed plants slowly died as the water would have been too acidic and the plants would have

After completing this experiment, I reject the hypotheses that when the amount of dish soap is increased in the water and duckweed solution, there will be more fronds of duckweed because the phosphorus and nitrogen in the dish soap will cause eutrophication and increased growth in the duckweed. There was not a significant (20%or more) difference in growth in any of the jars. The expected results were that jar B would have the most growth of duckweed because it was the most concentrated with dish soap, so there was more nitrogen and phosphorus in the jar to cause eutrophication. The expected result was that with every jar that had a smaller concentration of dish soap, there would be a smaller increase in duckweed growth. The actual experiment…

Each lab table was responsible for growing a pea plant. Nine pea plants were planted in total. The pea plants were separated into three groups. The first group was without any auxin, the second group had 500 ppm of auxin, and the last group had 5,000 ppm of auxin. The growth of the pea plants were recorded and ranked using a Wilcoxon test to determine which peas showed significant growth.…

The warm water level and the control have about the same amount of growth. It seems like around 95% of the warm water and control groups germinated. Next, the power level one group has about 75% germination, with substantially less growth than the control. The next group is power level 5 which has about 75-80% germination and about the same growth as group one. Finally, power level 9 has about 70-75% germination, but surprisingly has about the same growth as the group 's, power level one and power level 9.…

This could have been the reason the grass height declined more on certain days and less on others. To fix this issue we could have measured a specific amount of rock salt to give on each lab day to insure results are more accurate. Another issue could have been that the beaker with rock salt may not have diluted the water the same amount each day. This would cause different results and not give us an accurate understanding of our grass cubes growth rate. To fix this we should have let the rock salt dissolve in the water for a specific amount of time each day to make sure it diluted it the same as it day every day.…

However, with every experiment there is always room for human error. The season we did this experiment could affect our results. Or the time of day we went out because of the tides. When the tides come in, it can wash animals further up into the high marshes instead of having the majority of them at the shore line. The plants were so tall and so many the further we went into the marsh, so we could have miscounted and not got every single one and every burrow hole.…
