Duck Mask: Sculpture Analysis

Decent Essays
This is a duck mask. It is a high relief sculpture made from clay. Texture plays a part in my sculpture, the hat, the bow tie, the monocle, and the face are all different textures. Line also plays a part in my sculpture, the lines on the bow tie as well as the thick band around the duck’s hat. There is contrast by disassociation, you don’t see many ducks walking around with hats, bow ties, and monocles. The ducks bill has emphasis because it sticks out much farther than the rest of the duck. I was trying to make my duck look smug because he is richer than all the other ducks. That’s why I chose green, because green is not only the smuggest color, it is also the color of money. The hardest part was glazing it, I got a lot of places glazed in

The sculpted heads of the Olmecs are made from a variety of materials, some of which are an indication of extensive trade. First, the Olmec priest-rulers had sculptors use Basalt blocks as heavy as 18 tons to create large helmet heads, figurines and animal statues (von Sivers, Desnoyers, and Stow 137). Next, Olmec sculptors used clay, jade, serpentine to construct figures. Furthermore, since jade and serpentine were not available within 200 miles of San Lorenzo it has been concluded that San Lorenzo was not an isolated urban center, instead wielding far reaching trade connections (von Sivers, Desnoyers, and Stow 137).…

This is especially seen in the figure covered in roses. Additionally, another technique I used was my artist influence, Gerhard Richter and his method of dragging applied paint across a canvas to create a smooth-like texture. I applied this technique on the white background of each piece with a butter knife to make the background interesting. In particular, Gerhard’s Richter’s is the artist influence on my three pieces as I wanted to capture his technique of dragging applied paint across a canvas to create smooth-like…

The Aztec Goddess of Water relief showed in Figure 2 displays a large headdress. Feathers surround the wearer's face and highlights similar circular and rectangular decorative elements that are seen on the Aztec headdress. Close inspection by Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education senior ceramic scientist Pamela B. Vandiver confirms that the relief carries remains of blue, green and yellow pigments used on the rain goddess headdress.1 The comparable feathered headdress displays matching colors. The “Figurine of a Warrior” from the Cleveland Museum of Art is another example that helps illustrate the similarities of the art pieces (Fig 3).…

At first glance, the Hercules and the Hydra sculpture is easy to pass by. Located in the outside sculpture garden it stands on a slightly elevated bronze platform, which stands on a bigger, more elevated concrete pedestal that also rests on a larger concrete pedestal that has four embedded lights, each on one corner. The viewing area is large and allows for the audience to view the sculpture up close and far, while still being able circumambulate around the statue at a variety of distances. Because of the vastness of the space around the sculpture, at first glance from the walkway, the sculpture does not seem to be a big piece. However, the closer the proximity towards the sculpture, the bigger the piece seems to get, appearing as if Hercules…

On first inspection of the piece, the piece seems to be made up of lots of lines and blocks of colors creating jagged shapes along with broken lines all pieced together in a collage-like, layered fashion to form the overall appearance of a skull. The color palette used is mainly based on subdued primary tones of red, blues and yellows against the dominate black forming some shapes and lines, and the white of the abandoned canvas showing through. Subject Matter and Interpretation The first impression this artwork gives the viewer is one of…
