On December 17, 2013, Phil Robertson who is well known for the A&E show Duck Dynasty stated his view on homosexuality in an interview for GQ magazine. His anti-gay rant brought about much controversy. According to an article written by Drew Magary for GQ, Robertson said, "It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man's anus. That's just me. I'm just thinking: There's more there! She's got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I'm saying? But hey, sin: It's not logical, my man. It's just not logical." This statement, among a few others is what caused Phil Robertson to be suspended from Duck Dynasty on December 18, 2014. Although many would argue that Phil Robertson’s views on homosexuality are offensive, they are coming from a religious background. Fox News reported that Sarah Palin had gone on Facebook to express her thoughts of the suspension being an attack on freedom of speech. In the report it is said Sarah Palin specifically wrote, “Free speech is an endangered species. Those ‘intolerants’ hatin’ and taking on the Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing his personal opinion are taking on all of us.” Bobby Jindal also supports Phil Robertson. In the same report by Fox News Bobby Jindal puts out his own statement mentioning that the Robertson’s are great citizens of Louisiana, and although he doesn’t agree with Phil Robertson’s statement, this is indeed a free country. The Westboro Baptists protest at funerals, as well as many other events, with signs that say God is killing soldiers to punish America’s tolerance of homosexuals. Some of the signs are painted with hateful messages, such as “God Hates Fags” and “No Fags In Heaven”. These signs were carried in protest outside of Matthew Snyder’s funeral, a fallen soldier. His grieving father, Albert Snyder, sued Westboro Baptist church for belief in his right to mourn his son in peace, without the hateful bombardment of Westboro Baptists screaming “Thank God for Dead Soldiers”.…

While on a bike ride, Fred Phelps the founder of Westboro Baptist Church, rode faster than his two grandsons and got ahead of them. When he rode back to get them, a man, who turned out to be gay, was trying to lure them into the trees, with the intention of molesting them. The Bible tells us in the last days the love of many will grow cold and the comedian was cold and heartless. As a parent I felt for this child and the stigma attached to the negative words spoken over him. The writer of this editorial like so many others fined the article about Barron Trump and the naming calling tasteless and dishonorable. Adults should be mature enough to raise the bar when it comes to children, we should show respect and honor to others even if we do not like them. I understand comedians make their money by joking and bringing laughter to others however the line should be drawn when the joke becomes distasteful.…

Human beings are a very interesting species. We look for patterns in our fellow beings, and form opinions about those people that shape how we treat them. Such patterns in these people are called stereotypes, and they are more prominent when the patterns are uncommon. ‘Duck Dynasty’ and Quackery There are many conclusions that can be drawn from this article and the ignorance on the part of Phil Robertson is a substantial one. In Phil Robertson’s quote to GQ magazine it is likely that his intent is not to be offensive but the author, Charles Blow, points out that it is just as bad if not worse. I feel that Blow’s stance is that you can’t give Robertson a pass for his ignorance because that would include giving him a pass for his racism as well. Another conclusion that I believe can be drawn from the article is the lack of culture.…

Heterosexuality is the most orthodox predominant formation of society today. The concept of heterosexuality is socio-culturally constructed and, according to CJ Pascoe, it establishes an irredeemable understanding of masculinity. Pascoe conducts research on socialization revolving around high school students. In this essay, I am going to review how Pascoe’s analysis of the understanding of socialization of masculinity is structured and, more importantly, what she missed.…

When presented with the Labouchere Amendment in 1885, Queen Victoria refused to sign due to the references to lesbianism saying, “Women didn’t do such things”. It’s an entertaining story and yet, it’s a myth, one that began circulating in the 1970’s (“Background: Myth on Victorian and ban on Homosexuality”), and its popularity continues since it fits with the modern idea of prudish, sexually repressed Victorians. While we don’t know Queen Victoria’s views on homosexuality, we do know she had a happy, fulfilling sexual relationship with her husband and therein lies the dichotomy about the Victorian’s attitude to sexuality and gender, too reticent to speak about sexual matters in plain words and yet sexuality and gender roles was at the…

Sexuality is an aspect of human experience that is at once produced through society, regulated by society and used to regulate society (Craig 2012). Society prescribes to very heteronormative standards of sexuality. In which expectations and behaviours adhere to a strict gender binary, the reinforce gender norms (Lecture4A). For example, the appropriate couple is of opposite sexes, one male and one female. From what can be seen in these episodes of South Park, the couples present adhere to this ideal, the children seem to belong to families with one mom and one dad, who for all intents and purposes are married, except for Mr. Garrison who has a male partner, Mr. Slave, making them a same-sex couple.…

Larry Kramer lived infamously throughout the gay community for writing a controversial book which detailed the sexuality of the homosexual community called Faggots. Years after Faggots got released, Kramer released The Normal Heart play which highlighted his fight against the slow progress the government put forth. The movie, in my opinion, covered the monumental struggles, frustration, and heartache Ned Weeks, Larry Kramer’s character in the movie, and his companions grappled with. He and his friends started the Gay Rights Movement group which intended to spread the word about the AIDS disease and provide assistance to those who needed it. Throughout the movie, Ned Weeks and the remaining members of the group obtained different ideologies of how they would impact the community and spark change.…
