Duality In Poe's The Purloined Letter

Improved Essays
Poe’s “The Purloined Letter” was written as two conversations to further strengthen the dual nature of the piece. The concept of duality is the central focus of the story. The thread that carries the dual nature of the story is actually never directly stated, which is that Dupin and Minister D are brothers. Evidence of this first comes from Dupin explaining why the Police failed. He used the example of the “game of 'even and odd'”, where in order to win, the player has to think like the opponent, and thus know the opponent’s mind well. Like the game, Dupin’s sureness that he has indeed solved the crime hinged on how well he knew Minister D. Since he was right, Poe established Dupin as Minister D’s dual nature, his opposite. In Poe’s short story “William Wilson,” the literary use of juxtaposition sharpens the protagonist’s characterization in comparison to his alter ego. The narrator-protagonist, who chose to refer to himself as William Wilson, is depicted in the beginning of the story as partaking in a feeling of superiority among all of his other classmates with the exception of one. This classmate is also called William Wilson and ultimately is meant to represent the dark side of the narrator. Initially, the narrator can’t help but feel adoration but as the story continues he starts violently despising this other William, or in other words, his evil self. The narrator is portrayed as the good guy solely because the other William is represented as evil.…

In today’s world, the genre of romance has a very different connotation than it did over 150 years ago. Nowadays, romance novels are typically about two people falling in love and living happily-ever-after. However, in the beginning to mid 1800’s, the idea of Romance didn’t have much to do with relationships. The era of Romanticism was one that was marked by a strong contrast against the ideals of the more scientific Enlightenment that had occurred some years previously. It is in this period that many famous writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and many more first made their presence known as serious American authors.…

Edgar Alan Poe wrote among many short stories, The Masque of the Read Death. Although the title sounds horribly eerie, the story itself succeeded in becoming even creepier. Disease, known as the Read Death, struck a kingdom, killing off many subjects very gruesomely. The ruler, a prince known as Prospero, did nothing to assist in treating those ill, or preventing others from contracting Read Death. Instead, he ran, hiding away in a secluded castle, with noblemen, and entertainers.…

This idea is expanded upon in the third sentence as Poe use specific styles of syntax to illustrate his own disbelief. Two styles are seen when he states "Yet, mad am I not- and surely do I not dream". Poe constructs the wording of this sentence backwards- instead of I am not mad, it's mad am I not- showing a contradiction to what the sentence says. Wording the sentence backwards makes the reader think the opposite of what the sentence actually says; he is mad, he is dreaming.…

Dupin seems to recognise the similarities between him and the minister as he describes the minister to the narrator as "he is the monstrum horrendum, an unprincipled man of genius" and as such he takes exceptional merriment at defeating the minister in a game of wits. This is also where we first hear about dupin and the ministers, bitter and seemingly life long feud.…

From a dreamlike, exploration of a man’s psychological journey, the story moves now to one rooted in reality. Poe seems to be playing with, even mocking the readers who expect the story to end in the same way it has been told up to this point. Yet it seems the rescue is more than a deux ex machina. The final paragraph is a counterpoint to the opening passages of the story with the “dreamy indeterminate hum” of the opening now mirrored with the “discordant hum of human voices”,…

In this story, Poe shows the mental state of the character by having him explain all the actions he takes in great detail, but not anything else like his name or where he is now. When he was in the room with the old man he quoted, “ All in vain; because Death, in approaching him, had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim”(38). I think the author is trying to show us how the character thinks that death is already upon the old man and that he will die anyways. After he kills the man he tells the reader, “If you still think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body”(39). Hear the author shows the mental state of the character by making the reader want to question his state of sanity and for the character to describe in detail what he did with the old man’s body after he killed him.…

The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe was written over 150 years ago and the diction is a little hard to understand. It is titled The Raven because the poem is about a raven, but the raven doesn’t show up for a while so it keeps the reader interested throughout the poem and constantly wondering about the bird such as where it comes from and what it represents. This poem contains a lot of rhythmic rhyming. The speaker is emotional and the tone is intense. As the events of the poem grow more intense, the words and the rhythm of the poem pick up too.…

In Poe’s detective stories “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” and “The Purloined Letter,” Dupin serves as a model of rational deduction. Dupin seems to have almost supernatural deductive ability in solving mysteries. Since Dupin’s use of reason to solve mysteries is central to these stories, determining Poe’s views on the nature of reasoning is critical to an understanding of their meaning. Hurh (2012) argues that the description of Dupin’s dual nature of “the creative and the resolvent” (Poe, 1841/1975, p.144) alludes to an analytical method called “the regress” (p. 471, 476).…

Upon having read both Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray and Poe’s ‘William Wilson’ clear similarities exist between the two texts, most obviously the use of doubling and the doppelgänger motif. Far from simply being a coincidence, it is well known that Wilde sought great inspiration in the in the life and work of Edgar Allan Poe, and it would be through the writings of Charles Baudelaire that Wilde would discover Poe. However in England at this time the works of Poe were not very well know, especially when compared to the legion of followers he had in France, nonetheless according to Miller there was an expansion in “interest on both sides of the Atlantic in Poe’s genius”. (1977, 9) Over two decades before Wilde encountered any of Poe’s work Charles Baudelaire wrote and published his…
