On September 6, 2017 I met Holden Caulfield. He was recently reassigned to be as the other psychologist was having trouble with Mr. Caulfield. Holden often described a family including a child and the parents coming out of the church. He told me that he was focused on the boy who was, “walking in the street, instead...of the sidewalk…[the parents] not paying attention...walking in a straight line[ignoring]cars...brakes screeched”(115). Holden takes interest of the boy as the boy reminds him of himself. The boy’s careless nature and recklessness is somewhat desired by Holden. Prior to Holden’s encounter with the mummy he happens to pass by several graffiti that spells out “fuck you,” he signifies the graffiti as signs of chaos and an act that is unforgivable. His greatest fear is having the children at Phoebe’s school see the signs and become horrified of its meaning and what it stands for, in the previous chapters we understand that Holden’s dream if to become a catcher in the rye that saves children from falling off a cliff. This allows us to finally understand the meaning of the title of the book, and we also understand that even though Holden address very mature topics throughout the novel; his dream is to save the innocence of children. This idea of saving innocence also connects to the idea of Holden’s hatred for people he calls “phonies,” “phonies” are supposedly people who are not genuine, for example when people ask “how are you” but they really don’t care on the inside. He loves children and especially Phoebe because they do as they feel and children never mean harm.…

A few months down the road I will be achieving a milestone by graduating high school and having a taste of independence. Like Holden Caulfield, I too am close to entering adulthood, but the difference between him and I is our attitude towards change. In the novel, Holden's former teacher tells him that, 'the mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one" (page 188). Through a discussion of various themes and issues in the novel, we can conclude the Holden is, in fact, immature.…

Holden Caulfield In J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, the character Holden has peculiar behavioral tendencies. Holden is an emotionally damaged teenager who struggles to cope with the death of his younger brother Allie. Holden has many personal oddities that prevent him from conforming to a society of phonies to whom he cannot relate. Salinger shows his attentiveness toward the rhythms of speech by using italics quite frequently in order to let the reader know when a character is placing emphasis on a word, or even on just a syllable, in dialogue. The emphasis of a single syllable shows a realism to the dialogue of The Catcher in the Rye rarely seen not only in the works of Salinger?s time, but also before and after it. Salinger?s emphasis on the rhythm of speech is mirrored in his emphasis on the rhythm of thought, which, in turn, emphasizes the importance of both. Salinger uses paragraph breaks not only to change from one subject to another, but also to accentuate certain thoughts. In another demonstration of his literary brilliance, Salinger shows that he knows the human mind by using shorter paragraphs for more important matters.…
