Dualism
Dualism is a philosophy that affects the view of a person. Dualism leaves people with a double personality that is taken as a new persona that the person has created with their own mind. One of the most famous works that uses Dualism is The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde plot have inspired similar plot for movies such as Fight Club and Secret Window. The dualism that is shown in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is like the dualism in the films Fight Club and Secret Window because their protagonists started showcasing strange behavior, takes a major interest in the character of their dual self, and lastly, the protagonist fights with their dual self. Dualism has an effect on the human mind. Strange behavior is a result of that effect. In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll shows strange behavior by being in his house and not allowing people over. “The doctor, it appeared, now more than ever confined himself to the cabinet over the laboratory, where he would sometimes even sleep; he was out of spirits, he had grown very silent” (Stevenson 43). Mr. Utterson notices that Dr. Jekyll was being confined, which is unlike Dr. Jekyll. Yet unlike in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde where Mr. Jekyll is being confined, Fight Club shows The Narrator behavior to be considered insane and all over the place. When the Narrator says “Tyler isn’t here. Tyler went away. Tyler’s gone” (Fight Club), Marla gives a very confused face towards the Narrator thinking that he is insane. A dual self is hard to suppress. In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll was fighting to suppress Mr. Hyde after he killed Sir Danvers Carew. Chakrabart and Shubh state, “This is because Dr. Jekyll in the last phases of his lucidity recognizes the danger that Mr. Hyde poses to society and altruistically decides to do away with himself” (221). Dr. Jekyll knew he could not control Mr. Hyde. In the end of fighting with Mr. Hyde in himself, he had to kill himself due to Mr. Hyde actions could of gone worse. Unlike, on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde where Dr. Jekyll stops Mr. Hyde by killing himself before things got worse, In Fight Club the Narrator never knew he was Tyler until things got so bad that he could not control Project Mayhem or Tyler. The Narrator never knew he made Tyler, he thought Tyler was his friend and roommate. The Narrator says “This is crazy...” due to his final realization that he is Tyler Durden, Tyler explains why the Narrator made him by saying “People do it every day, they talk to themselves they see themselves as they’d like to be, they don 't have the courage you have, to just run with it”(Fight Club). The Narrator only choice of ending Project Mayhem and Tyler Durden was to shoot himself. Tyler Question the Narrator by asking “Now why would you want to put a gun to your head?” Narrator explains “Not my head, Tyler. Our head” (Fight Club) ending Tyler life, but is still seen alive.
