The ASCA addresses both the student and the client need to received education on the limitations, while the ACA only addresses the client in these situations. Both emphasize the need to plan out and to remain cautious in terms of staying true to confidentiality in virtual counseling, and letting clients know the benefits and the cautions of virtual counseling (ACA Code of Ethics, 2014) (ASCA Ethical Standards, 2016). In regards to the history of the ethics many ethical codes are newly developed, making it a priority to make it represent the best interests of all the parties involved. It even gives guidance as to how counselors need to document situations such as extending traditional boundaries (ACA p. 8). The ACA covers topics from the counseling relationship, relationships with other professionals, and confidentiality as does the ASCA. Yet, the ACA goes on to instruct counselors on the ethical guidelines in supervision, training, and teaching, in addition to research and publication, these topics are not explicitly stated in the ASCA, but can possibly be located implicitly in the ASCA with other codes. The ASCA does cover topics similar to the ACA such as boundaries, confidentiality, and virtual counseling. On the other hand it differs in topics such as student bullying and harassment, accepting students no matter what their gender or sexual orientation may define as (ASCA p. 5). Also, school counselor assist students in their academics, social and emotional skills, and may help some students in developing their social skills (ASCA p. 3). One can see how the ASCA carries information similar to the ACA, however, the writing in it does not read as technical, and where reading the ASCA one can easily scan
