My initial reaction to the piece was that I was confused. I had never seen or experienced modern dance before, so it took me a while to get used to the different way of moving as well as how I should interpret the piece. The foil square represents life. When the square was pulled high in the air it represented the past, but as the square moved closer to the ground it represented the present. The fabrics were all traditional Japanese fabrics, which represented the character’s roots and how you should always remember where you came from. This message originated in the stories where the characters moved from Japan, but every story carries this message. Third, the dialogue in this performance talked about “small deaths”, which symbolizes endings and leaving your past behind you. They mentioned how each small death prepares you for the big one, which shows how you have to learn to deal with the changes in your life as they come. Lastly, when they lowered the lights it created darkness, which is a symbol of the unknown. Darkness usually creates a scared or uncomfortable feeling within the audience, which shows how the characters felt in their new, unfamiliar place.
