Dual Language Arts Lesson Plan Essay

I teach first grade in an urban district in the state of Connecticut. About 90% of our students have a poor socio-economic status and our district struggles to provide them with additional resources to support their learning. Our district is in an economic deficit, in which they had to modify transportation and classroom aids to be able to have the sufficient budget to afford to pay the educators and keep the schools open. This means that there is no additional money for resources that will allow the students to improve their academic skills.. We do not have a written curriculum with guidelines, timelines, lessons, etc. Our district provides us with goals that students must master by the end of the year and with teacher’s guides and other materials …show more content…
It is a determining importance lesson that incorporates science, listening and speaking skills. This lesson is part of our science Animals unit and our Nonfiction language arts unit. In my class 19 out of my 24 students are English Language Learners and 6 have Individualized Educational Plans. My special education students get pulled out services daily, bur my ELL students do not because they are part of a Dual Language program in which they are supposed to get additional support from their Dual Language teacher. I have 4 above grade level students, 15 on grade level, 3 below grade level and 2 severely below grade level. Their language level is closely related to their reading performance and they need additional interventions to develop and master language skills. I am in charge of providing most of these interventions; we have an interventionist, but she can only help the four lowest students in the class. I tried as much as I can to provide as many interventions and additional support as possible, but with 24 students t can be a difficult task. Time is also an issue; we do not have enough time in the language arts block to meet the needs of all the students. I try to plan my week in such way that there are designated times to meet with different students and to reteach concepts when necessary. By doing this I make sure to provide support to all students and to have additional time for unexpected

Not only does lack of sufficient school funding deprive minorities of their freedom but also of the ability to reach fulfillment of ones’ potential. Abraham Maslow created a theory that states “that there are several levels of needs that a person must strive to meet before achieving the highest level of personality fulfillment” (Psych book 352). He arranged these into, what he calls, “the hierarchy of needs” (Psych book 352). Abraham Maslow’s theory is that once each level of needs is met, humans reach self actualization.…

In less than one semester, I have met Mr. Lorenzi, my AP Language teacher. I was very nervous joining the class, because I joined the class two weeks later than the other students. By the second day, I finally asked a question and Mr. Lorenzi went on to spend around 30 minutes on an impromptu class debate. He finished off the day saying that he loves when we ask questions, and it was the first time that I had ever felt a connection with a teacher and felt that they truly did like our questions as students. English has always been my least favorite core class, because I felt like it was boring compared to classes in the STEM field.…

Education has been a concern and major platform topic for many politicians. Many people have pondered how to fix the underachieving problem faced within the urban schools. I believe that many students are averaging below grade level in urban schools because there are some teachers in place who are no longer passionate about education, veteran educators are not willing to adapt their teaching style, and there is a lack of parent involvement. We live in a world that is ruled by electronics and teachers must be willing to adapt their instructional delivery to reach the learning style of their students. Lesson must be interesting and relative.…

Early stages In the early stages of a child’s development, language is developed socially within the child’s familial context. Through this social process, the child’s native language is developed which is unique to their cultural heritage (McDevitt, Ormrod, Cupit, Chandler & Aloa, 2013, pg. 344). To elaborate on the social influences, children learn not only their cultural language and communication form, but they also learn how to communicate by the example set within their social context (Gee & Hayes, 2011, pg. ). As an example, to communicate sorrow or grief, a Middle-eastern family may display open acts of mourning in comparison to a British family who may be withdrawn and inward in their display of mourning.…

The philosophy of education to me is ensuring that every student has the greatest opportunity to learn in a way that they learn the best. I feel most teachers believe the majority of students learn the same way and pace. Most believe, the more rigorous and the more repetitiveness of the material is correlates are successful methods for learning. I have been exposed to various types and styles of teaching and most they all have worked for different students at one point or another. But there have been many times throughout my formative and college years I’ve sat in a class and after seemingly hours of being lectured I realized that I didn’t remember a word the instructor said.…

In addition, I plan to always give my students a “heads up” about what is going on. If the schedules, routines, and transitions are planned beforehand and students know what to expect, I will be setting myself up for a classroom with much greater success. Lastly, I was again reminded of the importance of relationships. In my own classroom someday, I will strive to develop connections with each and every one of my students. If this is done, managing my classroom will come much more easily.…

Having an effective lesson plan should be one of the most important things that every teacher should strive to have. When teachers have an effective lesson plan it provides them with a guide for teaching a lesson. This allows for the least amount of distractions because having a lesson plan keeps teachers on track. It also allows for teachers to track students’ progress. Teachers can also set and achieve goals that they want their child students to learn by writing it down in their lesson plans.…
