Mandy Hale once said, “Ten years from now, make sure you can say that you chose your life, you didn’t settle for it.” 10 years from now is currently unimaginable, but my hope is that everything I have done for my future benefits my family and I in numerous ways. It is strange to think I will be off on my own studying at a college in two short years. I am a junior at Franklinton High School. Throughout my high school career I have been a member of multiple clubs and teams. I have maintained a 4.0 grade point average and this past summer I took the ACT and scored a 23. These achievements have blessed me with the opportunity to get a head start on college through Franklinton High School’s Dual Enrollment program. Through this program I am currently enrolled as a student at Southeastern …show more content…
Last year I took Dual Enrollment US History. Being in the dual enrollment class we were expected to excel beyond what is normally expected in high school. This gave me a chance to see history in much greater detail. This also opened my eyes in regards to why history is so important. I agree with Theodore Roosevelt’s quote, “The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.” If I were to pick my favorite era in history I would choose the Roaring 20’s. This era also saw the abundance of new products and technologies like automobiles and radios. This is my favorite era in history because it shows how my nation, the United States, can go from fighting in a war to having a prosperous economy with empowered

After high school, most students attend college in order to become qualified for a successful future career. In today’s society, attending a top-rated university or Ivy League institution is seen as the ticket for embarking on such a path. Yet because these programs are so competitive, the application process has become unnecessarily devastating, involving extensive test prep, unending academic pressure, exhaustive hours of extracurricular activities that may or may not earn a student an impressive mark of distinction, and emotionally draining interviews, campus visits, and networking events. The message revolving around college admissions is even worse than the agony of the application process itself—a message that a student’s worth and value…

When it came time to choose the classes I was going to take my senior year, I decided to enroll in the dual enrollment English class offered at my school. I met all the necessary requirements, but I did not receive my student ID number from the community college that was needed to complete my application to schedule to take the placement exam. After two trips to the community college, I had my ID number and was eligible to take the exam, but there were no more spots for the test held at my school. Being that I preferred receiving outright college credits, I had to schedule the exam on the college campus. I scored high enough not to worry about getting a seat in the class.…

Classes on Herodotus and Thucydides have all advanced my understanding of the Greek language and have sparked an interest in learning more about the interaction of the Greek poleis during the archaic period especially. These two classes and my love for the classics drove me to classical archaeology. While my college has not offered classes on classical archaeology specifically, I took three archaeology courses on the ancient Maya, Aztecs, and Andean civilizations. All gave me an understanding on how the material found at the sites represents an ancient culture that is very much alive. New discoveries and theories change our understanding each day of how the ancients lived and even serve to parallel our lives today.…

Put Forth the Effort Many years after watching TV shows with cowboys in them, I have realized that cowboys never take things lying down. Cowboys are not procrastinators. When they want something they are very determined to go after it and succeed. Cowboy actor and singer Roy Rogers lives up to the roles he plays on the screen by saying, “Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.” I feel the same way when it comes to my religion, my high school career, and my college career.…

I have discovered that history is an active engagement of analytical techniques to generate questions and develop answers, and not about memorization of names, dates, and battles. There is no new information to be gained from that, and while it is important to know, does not contribute actively to the betterment of knowledge about our past. Learning that history is not just a body of material you observe, but a study you engage and do, has been a major change in my view of history that I have gained through this course. Before I began this class, I viewed history as a passive study. I thought all there was to a history courses was memorizing dates, names, battles, and events.…

Future. That’s probably one of the scariest words I know. The future is unpredictable, it’s often wrapped in wrapping paper, ready to be opened and it can both be exciting and disappointing. While I was in Elementary, I dreamed of being a chef, a cop, a fashion designer, a softball player, a singer, and an actor. As soon as I was in middle school, I wanted to be one thing, a singer, I had decided that I liked singing enough for it to be a career, although my vocal range disagreed.…
