Dual Enrolling In High School Essay

Effects of Taking College Courses in High School High school students these days are juggling schoolwork, sports, extracurricular activities, and work. While this may seem like a difficult task in itself, many high school students are choosing to throw in college courses on top of all of this. This process is known as “dual enrolling.” In fact, during the 2010-11 school year, 82 percent of high schools reported that students were enrolled in dual enrollment courses and 69 percent reported enrollments in advanced placement or international baccalaureate courses (“Dual Enrollment, by the Numbers”). Although it can prove to be challenging at times, taking college courses in high school can be beneficial to a student both financially, and academically. The many students nationwide that are choosing to enroll in college courses while still in high school are most likely looking ahead to their next few college years. One of the main effects of dual enrolling is the improvement of college readiness. Getting used to the college grading scale and rigorous college work allows students to prepare for the type of skills, and mindset they will need in college. Students who get their college general education requirements out of the way in high school are allowed to take more of the classes they actually want to take in college. Studies also show that students who take advantage of dual enrollment while in high school are more likely to attend graduate school after completing a bachelor’s degree ("The Advantages of Taking College Courses During High School”). Dual enrolling can also be beneficial to a student’s chances of college admission.
